ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Dave Nachmanoff is an award-winning songwriter based in Northern, California. With a Ph.D. in Philosophy and virtuoso guitar skills, Dave's not just another male singer/songwriter. He tours as lead guitarist for Al Stewart when he's not doing his own concerts and teaching songwriting workshops. In recent years Dave has been doing a lot of collaborative projects, such as a family CD (Another Big Day), a CD with his brothers featuring the songs of his good friend Pete Hamilton (Threads of Time), and an all-instrumental tribute to Al Stewart (Wordless Rhymes). However, with "Time Before the Fall" he's gotten back to performing his own songs, mostly by himself, playing all the guitar, piano and bass parts, but bringing in some great players and singers to help with backing vocals and percussion. The overall acoustic approach to the CD highlights the songs themselves, rather than the production - however, the collaboration with producer/engineer Ben Decter, resulted in some beautifully recorded tracks! There are some themes of maturity, wistfulness, loss of innocence and a few "jeremiads" as well (probably not inappropriate given the time in which the songs were written). The emotional palette of this CD is probably the widest that Nachmanoff has explored so far. Recorded in early September of 2006, the title has a double meaning.

FANTASTIC!
I went to Al Steawart's concert and fell in love with Dave! WOW! Bought this CD and I absolutely love it! EVERY SONG is simple and yet soooo complex - easy to sing along with and yet pulls on so many "strings" and let's so many feeling come to the surface! Totally amazing - layers and layers of meanings and memories discovered eaach time I play this CD! "When I See You Again" and the "Judas Kiss" are the most touching songs I've heard in years!

THANKS, Dave - BRAVO !

This should be in everyone's collection it's a real gem
Dave Nachmanoff has created a real gem with Time Before The Fall. Not since Al Stewart's Year of the Cat, have I played a CD over and over again.....this really is a fantastic piece of creative work. Every song... yes every song is special on this CD.....how often can you say that nowadays???

Better all the time
This is Dave's best album yet, and that is saying something. From the production values that rival things on major labels, to Dave's skill as a lyricist and musician, I just can't recommend this one enough.

Dave goes from strength to strength
Dave's musical style is very much to my liking. He is a great guitarist, lyricist and performer. This album is the best he's done in my opinion and demonstrates the true breadth of his musical virtuosity. Oh, and by the way, he's a very nice guy as well!

fantastic folk
Fantastic folk

The first time I have heard about Dave was in a concert with Al Stewart in November 2006. He opened the concert with the songs from this CD and it was brilliant.

Superb
We just finished listening to Time Before the Fall, and loved it. Nachmanoff's songs are superbly creative, the lyrics so witty, touching, and evocative, the music so soothing to the ear (even when the lyrics have a scorpion's sting in the tail). His voice is also lovely, one of the few contemporary singers we've heard who can actually enunciate in song so that the listener can grasp the meaning of his words. And though, knowing his reputation as a great musician, we fully expected to be entertained by some lively guitar accompaniment, we were positively astonished to hear how good an all-around instrumentalist he is--not simply on the guitar but on the piano and other instruments as well. Wow!!!!!

We were positively delighted to hear Nachmanoff's superb performance on this CD.

Simple, Beautiful, Absolutely Incredible!
This is the best CD I've heard in years. It's worth the purchase price just for "Say goodbye to the Elephants", or "Judas Kiss". I can't get enough of it. This is Dave at his best!

Nachmanoff Stretches Out on NEW CD "Time Before the Fall"
Dave Nachmanoff’s most recent CD release, “Time Before the Fall”, is clearly his most interesting and well-written effort to date. It consists of twelve songs, all of which offer something a little different from one another in terms of both music and lyrics.

It begins with a stylish folk ballad (“Midnight Sea”) that’s on a par with the best work of “historical folk-rock” singer/songwriter Al Stewart. The guitar solo in the middle resembles a composite of guitarists that Stewart has worked with over the years. This is no coincidence as Nachmanoff has been performing with Al Stewart for the past several years, including a couple of extended tours to Europe. “George’s Corner” is a great bit of storytelling (a true story actually….I looked it up), complete with a catchy tune, about a homeless man who adds some color to his community by maintaining a public garden for all to enjoy.

“Rude Awakening” is a tip of the hat to all of our friends at Enron, while “Say Goodbye to the Elephants” uses the life of a seasonal circus worker as a device to emphasize the need to be involved. Things turn a bit dark (well, by Nachmanovian standards anyway) during “The Invader”, a piano-heavy story of mental illness, paranoia and bad dreams that features an Al Stewart guest vocal.

A couple of more songs worth noting: First, “Judas Kiss”, written from the perspective of the brother of Ted Kaczynski (aka The Unabomber). He eventually turned his older brother in to the authorities leading to his sentence of life in prison. For me, the most powerful song on the disc would have to be “When I See You Again”. This emotional piece is set on September 11th in which the narrator is a passenger on the doomed Flight 93 scheduled from Newark to San Francisco. We feel the sense of loss and hopelessness as he says goodbye to his family along with the hope that they’ll meet again in heaven.

Nachmanoff covers a lot of territory on this musical journey and does it very well. This CD reminded me of what I used to really enjoy when a favorite new album came out in my younger days: listen to the story and then go with it to the next level by learning more. And that’s a particularly enticing thing in this day of information and the internet.
