ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The international band Naghma was found during summer 2003 by Monika and Majid Tiken.

The word ‘naghma’ means ‘sound’ in Arabic. The melodies that the group Naghma plays are based on traditional Moroccan songs and beats, mixed with the hot rhythms of reggae, funk, and jazz.

The group consists of ten professional musicians. All of them take part in composing the songs.

With the help of their music, Naghma is promoting peace between different cultures and religions. They have participated in various festivals in Switzerland and Morocco, and have been invited to a number of radio stations (for example Radio Paradiso and Radio Lora). The Moroccan TV Station ‘2M Maroc’ accompanied Naghma on a musical journey.

Naghma’s debut album ‘Orange’ (2006) is a homage to the Moroccan poet and wanderer Abderrahmane El Mejdoub (16th century). The six songs support his experiences and deep thoughts. The second album ‘Bab Sahara’ (2008) takes us on a journey from Morocco (gnaoua music, berber rhythms, chaabi), and through the rich world of Latin music, reggae, and funk. Majid’s singing (in Moroccan, French, and English) beautifully completes the bridge between the different countries and their sounds.

Naghma, a mid summer night’s dream…
