The Old Photo Box (2006)
twenty miniatures for solo piano

Sarah Bob, piano

Imagine finding an old photo box up in the dusty attic, each photo telling of a story frozen in time. Suddenly, images start moving, coming to life, and you are sent into daydreams, flashbacks and recollections. With twenty miniatures, each restricted to only a few minutes, I have tried to portray a story, a drama, condensed with visual details that may sometimes resemble a short movie. Some of these portraits are based on real experiences of mine, while others are completely imaginary.

Lior Navok (b. 1971) has earned his place as one of the most innovative, fresh and communicative composers of the younger generation. Played in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Navok's music has been performed by orchestras and ensembles such as the Radio Philharmonie Hannover NDR, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, The Cantata Singers, Soloists of Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Chamber Orchestra, The Borromeo Quartet, Raschèr Saxophone Quartet among many others. Known for his passion to collaborate with artists from other disciplines, Navok has collaborated with the choreographers Lucía Baumgartner (inFlux Dance Company), Alexandra Waierstall (Noema Dance Works) and visual artists Ling-Wen Tsai and Ohad Meromi, as well as collaborations include piano improvisations on poetry with poet D. Nurkse. Mr. Navok received numerous awards. Recent ones include the Lili Boulanger Memorial Fund Award, Prime Minster Award, Massachusetts Cultural Council, and America-Israel Cultural Foundation. Fellowships and residencies include the Tanglewood Music Center, Cité Internationale des Arts, Aspen Music Festival and the MacDowell Colony. Recent commissions include the Koussevitzky Music Foundation, Fromm Music Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, Jerome Foundation, among many others.Lior Navok has released Three highly acclaimed CDs – The Old Photo Box, Hidden Reflections and Meditations Over Shore - "The Music is dreamy and utterly gorgeous" (American Record Guide.) www.liornavok.com
