Duo Deletaille Dayez

Nicolas Deletaille et Jean-Michel Dayez se sont rencontrés à la Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth de Belgique en septembre 1998. Reçus tous deux pour le prestigieux cycle boursier de trois ans d'études en résidence dans cette institution unique, ils y ont cultivé et mûri leur expérience musicale individuelle et commune.

Au cours de ces années intenses, ils ont non seulement exploré le répertoire en duo mais ils ont également participé à des projets plus larges comme l'étude du "Concert" de Chausson, du "Quatuor pour la Fin du Temps" de Messiaen, l'enregistrement du quintette avec piano de César Franck et la création mondiale de « Resonances » pour trio avec piano de Kris Oelbrandt.

La vie à la Chapelle Musicale a également soudé une solide amitié qui s'étend bien au-delà du partage musical. Cela explique la survie du duo après leurs études communes, malgré deux ans de séparation géographique due aux lieux de leurs études ultérieures (Conservatoire National de Paris / Juilliard School à New York) et malgré de nombreuses activités familiales et professionnelles.
Ainsi, après cinq ans de travail commun, le duo Deletaille Dayez a été invité à se produire au Palais des Beaux Arts de Bruxelles dans le carde de la série "Dimanche au Mont des Arts". Plus récemment, ils ont enregistré l'intégrale des cinq sonates de Beethoven pour violoncelle et piano.

Nicolas Deletaille Bio

BIOGRAPHY:

Nicolas Deletaille was born in Brussels in 1979. After graduating from the Conservatoires Royaux de Musique in Mons (1993-1998) and Brussels (1991-1993), he was a student in the Queen Elisabeth of Belgium College of Music (1998-2001, Luc Dewez) and finally at the Juilliard School (2001-2003, Timothy Eddy). He also worked with such masters as Serge Collot, Valentin Feyguin, Johannes Goritzki, Sigiswald et Wieland Kuijken, Gérard Leclerc, Alexander Rodin, Xavier Gagnepain, Pieter Wispelwey, Steven Isserlis and Steven Doane.

Nicolas Deletaille is an active performer in numerous countries (France, Germany, Iran, Italy, Japon, Luxembourg, The Nederlands, Switzerland, Poland, Russia, Spain, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States) as a soloist as well as a chamber music player. Since 1998, his principal duo partner is the French pianist Jean-Michel Dayez. Nicolas Deletaille is member of the Mendelssohn Ensemble.

In addition to his Bach recording, Nicolas Deletaille's discography includes also two chamber music CDs (one for the Queen Elisabeth of Belgium College of Music and the other with the Mendelssohn Ensemble). In January 2006, he recorded the Schubert famous "arpeggione sonata" with the maestro Paul Badura-Skoda on arpeggione and on pianoforte instruments.

Nicolas Deletaille has earned recognition for his enthusiastic activity in the Belgian music field: he was awarded in 2003 the "Prix Jeanne et Willem Pelemans". He was also the recipient of a scholarship from the "Fondation belge de la Vocation", which was given to him in 2002 for the purpose of buying a cello piccolo and to pursue his search for the rare instrument "the arpeggione". He was also the recipient of the "Belgian American Educational Foundation" scolarship (2001), which allowed him to study in New York.

In 2003, Nicolas Deletaille travelled for three months in Turkey and Iran with a fiber carbon cello (Quintus) for a cultural project on the mythical silkroad. He is currently teaching cello at the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU, Cyprus). Nicolas Deletaille plays on a N.F. Vuillaume cello (1865). The arpeggione (2001), on which he decided to play the Schubert D821 sonata, and his piccolo cello (2002) are designed and built by the Belgian violin maker Benjamen La Brigue.

BIOGRAPHY:
Jean-Michel Dayez began his musical studies at a very early age. He entered the Valenciennes Conservatoire at 11 and continued his studies at the Lille Conservatoire where he won 5 First Prizes.
He met Jean-Claude Van den Eyden at the Conservatoire Royal of Brussels in 1997. The very first year, he was awarded a First Prize with a special distinction and the Jury Special Prize. He entered the Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth in 1998. He had for three years the privilege to be a boarding student of the prestigious institution and graduated from that school with special distinctions of the Jury.

He then attended the classes of composition and of singing accompaniment at the Paris Conservatoire. He obtained a diploma for singing accompaniment in the class of Anne Grappotte and a Prize for harmony in the class of Jean-François Zygel.
In 2002, he was a prize winner in the Tenuto Competition in Brussels and in the Emmanuel Durlet Competition in Antwerp. In January 2004, he was awarded a Prize from the Emile Bernheim Foundation in Brussels and from the Meyer Foundation in Paris;
Jean-Michel Dayez has been playing regularly in concert for several years already. He has performed some of the great piano concertos with orchestra (Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Liszt, Rachmaninov). He was twice invited by the Brussels Philharmony, gave solo or chamber music performances for the radio (Musique 3).

A GREAT YOUNG CELLIST FOR OUR TIMES
There is something profoundly correct about Deletaille's playing -- emotional intensity, virtuosity, and perfection without ever becoming either mechanical or introverted. Total concentration in the service of the music itself and the composer. You do have to be careful in these days of self-indulgent virtuosos, or even worse, those "modern" interpretations that sap all the life out of the notes in a misguided attempt at "virtuosic impartiality". None of that here -- it's just a pure pleasure to hear someone playing for the sheer joy of playing!

Deletaille's Bach CD came out in 2006, and his Beethoven CD, accompanied by the excellent pianist Jean-Michel Dayez, in 2007. The Bach suites I rate with the best ever interpreters: Casals, Rostropovich, Fournier, etc. His Beethoven sonatas are exquisite, again ranking with the classic recordings by Casals/Serkin, Rostropovich/Richter, and Fournier/Gulda.

The only quibble I have is that the great Fugue that concludes Sonata No. 5 (Opus 102 No. 2) is not as deliberately paced as the interpretation of Fournier/Gulda, presented in this new recording as a very different though equally correct interpretation. But Deletaille/Dayez make it work within the context of their own vision of the whole sonata.

Still, I would consider this a compliment rather than a criticism to be compared to Pierre Fournier and Friedrich Gulda. Deletaille's Bach is fast-paced, but does not sound fast. Incredible virtuosity that presents the music at a speed that seems just right. Only when I compared his timings to other favorite recordings I realized that this is a great technical feat. Note that Deletaille uses a "Violoncello Piccolo" built in Belgium in 2002 for the Sixth suite -- attention to the music and the composer's intentions (which are here unclear!). Bach's Sixth suite is always a problem to perform since Bach did not write it for a normal cello.
