Contemporary and jazz vocalist, Nell, is one of the most versatile performers in South Africa. Equally comfortable in folk, jazz, Afrikaans or adult contemporary, this singer performs her favourite music as well as original music written by Nell herself, or songs especially written for her. Be it a 1920’s jazz show or a simplistic Afrikaans show, Nell has become well-known for her big stage personality and formidable voice.
Nell did her first solo show at the age of 16 in the Moonbox theatre in Sunnyside Pretoria. She was chosen as a semi-finalist in the ATKV Crescendo competition with her own song at the age of 18. After school, Nell went to study jazz and popular music at Tshwane University of Technology, where she is currently lecturer in jazz vocals and ensemble.
She obtained her B.Tech Music degree in 2006. By that time she has done many jazz and theatre shows on her own and with her jazz band.
In 2007 Nell formed the all-female group “La Diva” and performed as lead-vocalist in this group until 2010. With La Diva, Nell recorded an album “Like a Feather” produced by the acclaimed Marius Brouwer in 2008; she shared the stage with Laurika Rauch in two productions “Laurika en Nuwe Vriende” in 2008 and “Laurika en La Diva Maak Musiek” in 2009.
Nell appeared in the rock-cabaret show “Die Gespanne Passasiers – Sonder Brieke” in 2008 at KKNK and Aardklop, in La Diva’s “Wonderbra’s, Stiletto’s en al daai Jazz” in 2009 at KKNK and all around the country and La Diva’s “Cocktails, Convertibles en al daai jazz” in 2010 at KKNK and Volksblad Festival.
In 2011 Nell decided to part ways with La Diva to fulfil her dream to be a solo artist. Her adult contemporary Afrikaans song,“Anderkant die Stilte”, written by Johann Slabbert, is playlisted on radio stations throughout the country.
Nell’s love for jazz standards never died and she can regularly be seen at an informal jazz gig, or even a 1920’s theatre production. Nell featured on vocals in the show “Café Swing” in May/June 2013 at the Brooklyn theatre in Pretoria.
Nell’s long awaited jazz album, “Boulevard” have been released in August 2013.
