Album Notes
Newton Circus was founded by brothers Kenneth and Colin Ong, and the band released their debut album in July 2012. The self-titled EP, newton circus, includes five original songs, each featuring arrangements that combine sounds of rock and synth elements with classical instruments such as strings and wind instruments. Together with the addition of soft yet nuanced vocals, the result is a series of multi-layered harmonies, each with its own distinctly personal character.

Inspired by the peaceful solitude of Scandinavian landscapes, this EP explores themes of existentialism, purpose and desire; only to find the world filled with wonders beyond imagination. In ‘Save Me From Falling’, the EPs headlining track, vibrant melodies of woodwind and strings contrast with yearning drones of guitars to portray an emotional contradiction that besieges a searching soul. But as newton circus plays on and arrives at ‘Home’, a beautifully crafted ode which features unusual change in time signature from 4/4 to 5/4, the journey approaches a deeper peace, revealing a gentle tranquil self-assurance. This budding sense of contentment strengthens in the final track, 'Where Have the Nights Gone', as it concedes in the higher power of the universe and the simple joy of living each moment without expectation but subtle appreciation. Along the way, 'Remain' and 'Lay Me Down' explore the malignant nature of solitude in city life, where it mani- fests as emotional loneliness rather than as opportunities for spiritual self-reflection and discovery.

With multiple layers of sound and deeper meanings of text, newton circus gets better with every listen.

“Newton Circus, far from the madhouse of cacophonic sounds that it's name might suggest, presents a collection of heartfelt compositions. A memoir of sorts - songs that represent a journey; songs that dig deep into the heart as one searches for peace of mind; songs permeating with a certain fragility and wistfulness, yet tempered by a calm reserve.” - Varian Lim, director, TAB

“Newton Circus produces music that transports you to distant memories and faraway places. Their songs evoke images from poncho clad crowds in autumn European music festivals to quiet sublime Scandinavian landscapes; and from pulsating beach party dance floors to intimate personal moments. Kenneth and Colin have a keen ear to the fine details of their lush sonic artwork. They are meticulous in their execution and very much in touch with how these specific details can and will affect the listener's emotional response. Crucial and vital traits for songs that go beyond the formulaic output that is saturating music stores today.” - Kevin Foo, producer, Loft Studios
