ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
'Little Cowpoke' is the amazing first album by the Grammy winning group Nickel Creek. Sara Watkins was 11, Sean Watkins was 15 and Chris Thile was also just 11 when they completed the tracks on this CD. They were 'discovered' playing at the Gene Autry Museum in Los Angeles in the late summer of 1992. They were performing like professionals, but they still had a child-like, unspoiled joy for what they were doing. I felt I had to capture this, since soon they would be grown, and there would be no memory of how they were as children.

The result of this collaboration is 'Little Cowpoke', a collection of cowboy songs from real cowboys to movie cowboys. Sara Watkins sings up a storm on "I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart", the whole band plays blistering bluegrass on "Deep in the Heart of Texas", with Sean Watkins on mandolin, and Chris Thile foreshadows his cross-over mandolin playing on his solo for "I'm an Old Cowhand". At this stage in its career, Nickel Creek included Chris' dad, Scott Thile, on bass and occasional vocals (Pecos Bill). There is even an example of harmony yodeling! (Sara was a champion yodeler in her younger days). Chidren love this CD because they get to hear other children sing and play, and this is exceptional, fresh and virtuostic performing. An inspiration to the young and the not-as-young!

SO perfect, Nickel Creek never ceases to amaze me!

Fun for all ages
My grandson from Texas was singing "Deep In the Heart of Texas" from Astros games attendance. My online search for the song produced this album - I had not heard of the group. We both love it! His parents set the replay button for him.

Great musicianship with lots of youthful enthusiasm
My husband and I love this cheery CD by Nickel Creek. The young singers are excellent (as is the adult of the group), and they play their instruments very well also.

Fantastic!
I ordered this CD for my son's 'cowboy' 5th birthday party - the party's still a week away but the CD's a massive hit! I never knew a child could gallop up and down the sitting room so many times to 'Deep in the Heart of Texas', singing at the top of his voice!

CD Baby

On the crest of a wave of amazing kid's music crashing over the desks at CD Baby these days, this album, by the well-loved bluegrass ensemble, Nickel Creek, features Sara, Chris and Sean at their young ages of 11 and 15. Absolutely mind-boggling vitality and performances abound in this premium album that both adults and kids can enjoy. If your jaw doesn't drop open, you're not paying attention. "Little Cowpoke" raises the bar once more on intelligent, classy music for kids, exposing young cowboys and cowgirls to upright, fun and mature music. Parents won't tire of this one.

Great Album
I personally love the sound of Nickel Creek so when I found this cd I was intrigued. I knew they had an album before their debut on Sugar Hill Records but I could never find it. Well I have to say that is is a great beginning. It is not as introspective as their later cds but they are kids here. They do a great job. I even have a bootleg of them singing "I'm An Old Cowhand"in 2001. Pretty cool.

An Amazingly Well Done Album By Some Very Talented Kids!!!
Will you enjoy this album? The answer depends upon what type of person you happen to be. If you are not excited by anything other than the same old same old, then this special collection of country classics done by the most talented kids you're ever going to hear is definitely not for you. If you don't enjoy the quality of a well rounded group playing their own instruments with total perfection, then Little Cowpoke is not for you. But if, as I do, you enjoy the chance to hear a grammy winning group filled with enthusiasm and heart before they made the big-time playing old country songs and obviously having a whole lot of fun doing so, then Little Cowpoke, by The Nickel Creek Band, is definitely for you, and you will surely enjoy it for years to come.

Lots of fun. All of the classics of the genre.
The West is a state of mind and with this CD it's easy to imagine we're out on the trail. I've been looking for a CD with all of the classics and this is it--with the bonus that kids are singing the songs and playing instruments. The more guitar-, fiddle-playing youngsters I can show my daughter the better.
