Vessel Music Compilation
The sound sculptures of Nicolas van Krijdt are as hauntingly beautiful and ethereal as his gorgeously original hand-built vessels are heavy and substantial. What a great surprise. It is just the first of numerous subtle paradoxes one gradually discovers in becoming familiar with the music vessels and sound sculptures that Nicolas meticulously crafts from industrial quality materials entirely by his own hands. The next surprise is that Nick uses violin and cello bows to play each vessel. One of the appeals of Nick's music, in my experience, is how deeply meditative and transfixing it quickly becomes. But watch out because this ambient realm is also bracing, challenging, and likely to induce a wide array of emotionally strong reactions.

The work of Nicolas van Krijdt, it is important to note, is entirely unique, powerfully evocative, and viscerally appealing. The van Krijdt sound is also distinctly musical even though it is brand new territory. It brings to mind the ocean sounds from the deep ocean where whales sing and sharks occasionally surface menacingly. It is also highly capable of inducing trance-like feelings of hypnotic depth. Clearly Mr. van Krijdt is an artist of astounding devotion to the crafting of his vessels, to the substance of his sculptural vision, and to the new musical territory his vessel is bringing to life.
