ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Nikki Lynn Ragsdale... agus cairde (...and friends)

English translation follows each section in Irish, below

Cé gur rugadh i gCalafóirne í, chaith Nikki cuid mhór dá saol in Eoraip-san Íodal, san Ghéarmáin, agus i Sasana. Ba é i Sasana a chuir sí aithne níos fearr ar an chultúr Éireannach — ceol, teanga, agus stair na tíre. Fuair sí amach le linn an ama sin gur tháinig cuid dá sinsear féin as Éirinn, rud nach raibh ar a heolas roimh sin! Chuaigh Nikki go hÉirinn den chéad uair sna hOchtóidí, sular bhog sí ar ais go Calafóirne. Nuair a bhí sí in Éirinn shocraigh sí ar an teanga a fhoghlaim, lann sí ina haonar. Tá sí ina ball de Chomhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, ag feidhmiú mar Threoraí na Gaeilge do Chraobh Cooley-Keegan (San Francisco), agus do West Region CCÉ. Tá sí ag cur fúithi in Hayward, California. Na laethanta seo, ceolann Nikki go minic ar an tsean-nós agus seineann sí an bodhrán ag seisiúin ceoil traidisiúnta ar fud an cheantair, agus ceolann sí ar an ardán fosta. Is minic a bhí sí féin agus buíon áitiúil ag cluichí Garbhchríocha na hAlban agus ar Aonacha beaga Athbheochana. In amanna, ceolann sí ina haonar. Tá sí ina ball de Chomhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, ag feidhmiú mar Threoraí na Gaeilge do Chraobh Cooley-Keegan (San Francisco), agus do West Region CCÉ. Tá sí ag cur fúithi in Hayward, California.

Although born in California, Nikki spent a good deal of her life in Europe-in Italy, Germany, and England. In England, she got to know Irish culture better — its music, language, and history. During that time she discovered some of her own forebears came from Ireland, something she hadn't known before! Nikki went to Ireland for the first time in the 80s, before moving back to California. While in Ireland she decided to learn the language, and the bodhrán too. Toward the end of the 80s she found means to learn Irish (books, tapes, and teacher Imelda White). She also got her bodhrán! A few years later Nikki began to collect songs in Irish, and she has continued along that path. She goes to Ireland as often as she can for immersion in Irish language and culture, but Irish can be found in the San Francisco Bay Area too, with opportunities to use the lovely language of Ireland in the "Gaeltacht" that has been growing there. These days, Nikki often sings sean-nós and plays the bodhrán at traditional sessions all around the area, and she sings on stage too. She has often been at Scottish Highland games and small Renaissance Faires with a local troupe. She performs on her own sometimes, as well. She is a member of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, serving as Irish Language Officer for the Cooley-Keegan branch (San Francisco), and for the West Region of CCÉ. She lives in Hayward, California.

••• Le bióchas mo chroí... (with thanks from my heart, to...)

...Do Thadhg Mac Dhonnagáin, do Pheadar Ó Ceannabháin, agus do Lillis Ó Laoire as an chuidiú a thug siad dom leis na nótaí, leis na haistriúcháin a rinne mé, le mo chuid Gaeilge -- agus don fhoighid nach beag a bhí acu liom.

...Tadhg Mac Dhonnagáin, Peadar Ó Ceannabháin, and Lillis Ó Laoire for the help they gave me with my notes, my translations, my Irish -- and for their infinite patience.

Ar fheabhas!
Tá an diosca seo go han-deas ar fad. Rogha na n-amhrán is deise sa sean-nós atá ann, cinn an-cháiliúla agus cúpla ceann nua-chumtha. Tá guth éadrom taitneamhach ag Nikki. Agus tá Dance Around Molly go hiontach, freisin. Molaim an diosca seo do dhaoine gan taithí ar an sean-nós, fiú.

very beautiful
This CD bears many wonderful songs, with mainly a capella renditions from a voice sincere, pure, and simply beautiful. The Irish accompaniments, when present, are supportive rather than distracting, with delightful performance from all concerned. It does the heart good, and I'm glad it's release is in time for Christmas giving.

Pure elegance!
I've been looking for a CD like this for a long time. The singing is hypnotic and begs several listenings. I especially appreciate the accompanying booklet/liner notes that include detailed notes and song translations. The instrumental tunes sprinkled here and there are genuine toe-tappers. Enjoy!

Just amazing
Irish music tradition has two families of singing. The more frequently heard are the pub-room ballads - think Clancy Brothers or the Irish Tenors.

But much much older is the Irish sean-nos style. Involving musical techniques that fall outside the repertoire of most other singers, it is like a distinctively different flavor. Sean-nos styling can provide a distinctive spice that is hard to define -- but you know it when it is there.

On this CD, Nikki Ragsdale's stylings are well matched with her singing ability and knowledge of the Irish language; together they blend beautifully. The smaller selection of instrumental tunes on this CD are performed with equal amounts of talent and fun.

If you already enjoy traditional Irish music, I recommend this CD highly.

And if you've never gotten to know sean-nos singing ... this is an excellent CD to introduce you to that style.

Crystal clear.
I haven't been a fan of sean nós but I may become a convert after listening to Nikki. I agree with the previous reviews in terms of her singing quality but what impresses me most is that her Irish words are true and clear, often not the case in this type of singing.
