This is the sound of catharsis, the purifying release of the emotions and tension by bringing repressed material to consciousness.
From the start of the Seattle acts first album the listener is hit with an opening track that evokes the sense of smashing through a wall with a sludge hammer, and proceeds from there to fall into the resonant second track as if one is stumbling down dark, foreboding steps. The third and final, thirty minute epic plunges the listener through a fiery industrial tunnel.
For the entire hour the listener is held in a deep space filled with strong sounds and ambient beauty, as if it were performed within a giant cavern at the center of the earth. It is equally, violently aggressive and delicately beautiful, melded together with a cinematic sensibility and buried in heavy emotion. It is dark but not hopeless.
Drums are the heartbeat of this movement, pounding through with tribal force. Electric guitar, the staple of rock, is used in a variety of unusual and refreshing ways, but the careful infusion of piano, violin, bass, drum machines, sound samples, synths, and wide ranging vocals makes one forget that this is a solo artist. Indeed, if this initiation is only the beginning of a larger journey, one can only wonder where may lead to in the future.
