Orb Mellon is the blues moniker of Mike Malone, founder and guitarist of the seminal 1990s indie rock band and Sony/Epic recording artists Dirt Merchants.
Orb Mellon’s blues mines the raw energy of 20th Century American roots music, particularly whiskey fueled house party delta blues. Influenced as much by electronica and heavy metal as by the likes of Bukka White and Junior Kimbrough, Orb Mellon performs pure, sonically aggressive original blues, free from any quaintness or historicism, prompting one reviewer to identify Orb Mellon’s work simply as “blues in all its primeval glory.”
Orb Mellon has been featured in regional, national and international press and his music has been included in a diverse range of media including feature films and television. Orb Mellon’s songs “Long Way Home”, “What I’m Gonna Do with You”,and “Gonna Find It” were featured in seasons 3 and 4 of the FX network hit crime drama “Justified.” The song “Aberdeen” was included in the 2012 season of the HBO drama “True Blood.” The song “Gonna Find It” was also included in the feature film “Kill for Me.”
“Love & Violence” is Orb Mellon’s first new album in 4 years. It chronicles two extended solo home recording sessions in November 2012 and February 2013. The result is a provocative collection of raw, raunchy psychedelic swamp and juke blues from Connecticut's premier blues blaster.
