ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
‘Live at Joe Mamas’ is the debut album for Toronto Hammond B3 quartet Organic. Their signature brand of B3 jazz blends hard bop and blues sensibilities with original compositions and blistering improvisation.

Organic was formed when Ryan Oliver (Derek Miller, Shuffle Demons, Fishook) returned to Toronto after 5 years on the New York scene and sat in with his former collaborator Nathan Hiltz’s (GHT, Terra Hazelton, Brandi Disterheft) group at Joe Mamas in the entertainment district in mid 2012. “Ryan shares our love of the great organ groups led by Jimmy Smith, Lonnie Smith, George Benson, and Wes Montgomery. When he played with us it was obvious it was something special - he was immediately hired as the fourth man.”

In early 2011 the drum chair passed from Sly Juhas to Morgan Childs (Brandi Disterheft, Robi Botos, Amada Tossoff). Childs is a BC native who moved to Toronto in 2010 and has quickly become a top call drummer. “Morgan swings hard and keeps a strong groove happening for the band, while generating a lot of hard driving excitement”, says Oliver. Holding down the B3 is the legendary jazz pianist Bernie Senensky. Born in Winnipeg, he has been a first call pianist for over forty years performing with George Coleman, Buddy DeFranco, Art Farmer, Frank Morgan, Art Pepper, Red Rodney, Zoot Sims, Joe Williams, and Phil Woods to name a few. Pianist Bill Evans put it best “I could just sit and listen to Bernie Senensky play all day.”

The group plays every week in the heart of Toronto’s entertainment district at Joe Mamas; a nightclub that serves some of the best ribs in Toronto and is one of the few remaining rooms that has an in-house Hammond B3. The music at Joe Mamas is predominantly R&B groups but the club maintains a jazz policy on Sunday nights to keep the instrument going. “It made a lot of sense to record the album at Joe Mamas, we know the room, and there is a certain kind of energy when you play in front of a live audience that is difficult to capture in the studio. Jazz music, and B3 jazz in particular, is a music that was born and developed in clubs and later concert halls.”

The debut album was released at The Rex Hotel in Toronto in June 2013
