ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Peruvian Folk music is the result of a long process of assimilation between ancient native cultures, the Spanish Conquerors, and the African cultures that arrived in Peru with the slaves during the time of colonialism. According to many archeological findings, pre- Hispanic Peru was highly developed musically. The Spanish legacy arrived as a conglomeration of many cultures that brought not only a new musical language to the New World, but also new instruments and new performing techniques. The African people who came to Peru arrived for the most part from the Antilles. They developed their own musical expressions when they mixed their musical traditions with the native music. The anthology included in this recording offers a rich variety of Criollo and Andean music, translated into the language of a symphony orchestra. Some of the genres came from Europe at the end of the nineteenth century, but their uses in serenades and indigenous celebrations gave them their own identity. Today they are an important part of Peruvian musical tradition. To listen to this recording is to travel on an amazing journey to Peru through its music, with an itinerary so full of stirring emotions of a distant country that it seems not so far away.
