ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Othin Spake:

Othin Spake started as a joke. Put together march 2005 by Teun Verbruggen, who got “carte blanche” at Archiduc in Brussels. Teun decided to play a complete Improvised session with the exentric guitarplayer Mauro Pawlowski (dEUS, Somnambula, Mitshubishy Jackson,…) and piano-rhodesplayer Jozef Dumoulin (Mäâk Spirit, Magic Malik, Octurn,…)
This first session (on a lousy, rainy sundayafternoon) turned into a complete musical party going from very rough soundscaping, to punk, minimal elektronic and Jazz.
It was an unbelievable event with very fresh, innovating music from three musicians who never played together before.
Immediately they were asked for Jazz-middelheim 2005, Petrol, Flanders Jazz Meeting (where they immediately became one of the most discussed bands …. “This is no Jazz!!!!!!”
Now they’re asked to Play John Zorn’s supportact at AB, Brussels and many other great things are pending.

They’re not playing pure Jazz but they call their music “emofreejazznoizesweetpunk” which comes close to what they’re bringing. Every concert is a complete discovery and a fully improvised set … so worth checking out!!

Teun Recorded all the music they played (over 10 hours of musical) and decided to make a trilogy with all this impro sessions, resulting in their first release “The Ankh”.
The “Ankh” will be released on Teun and Bruno Vansina’s label RATrecords, oktober 2006. A tour of 5 dates is coupled to the official release.

“The Ankh” is the first cd in a trilogy planned to be made by the end of 2007.
The music on this first album is the first part of a live recording in 2005 (Petrol). This was Othin Spake’s 3rd gig.
The last song comes from their first gig (at Archiduc, Brussels), also the very first time the boys met eachother.
All the music is free improvised…no harmony, structure, melody was set in advance.
Othin Spake chose to put it as a complete set without cuts on the cd because of the very natural flow of the music.
The basic recordings were of a terrible sound-quality (gated drums, a very compressed sound,…) and during the set Jozef and Mauro’s amplifiers broke.
Christine Verschorren worked a lot to restaure some of the original soundquality of Othin Spake. She managed to get an as warm as possible sound out of very “crappy “ recordings.
“The Ankh” stays a very rough sounding album but reflects quite good the energie of the band.
The next two albums of the trilogy will be the complete “archiduc-recordings” and a mix of sompe studio-improvisations Othin Spake did.
Hope you like it!

Some press:

*“Othin Spake is een superformatie die het spannendste van het Belgische jazz- en rockwereld bundelt: Mauro Pawlowski, Teun Verbruggen en Jozef Dumoulin. Eigenzinnigheid is hun credo. Othin Spake is dan ook geen jazz pur sang, maar improvisatie met invloeden van jazz, punk, rock, emo…”

Othin Spake is a superband who mixes the at the moment “most exciting musicians” from both the belgian jazz and rock scene. They’re very fresh and innovating, bringing a very new concept of improvised music. A mix of Jazz, punk, rock, emo,...

Vooruit Geluid 2006

*”Othin Spake” : drummer Teun Verbruggen (Jef Neve Trio, Flat Earth Society,...), toetsenwonder Jozef Dumoulin (Mââk's Spirit, Octurn,...) en nieuwe dEUS-adept Mauro Pawlowski. _

One of the most happening “new things”. It’s not pure jazz, which makes them very unique. They played at events as Jazz Middelheim and Flemish Jazz meeting where they were remarked by their new way of playing improvised music...

*Othin Spake, 27/01/2006, Brussels

“Teun Verbruggen has long been a member of many local groups, some of which are among my very favourite: Padcal Schumacher Quartet, Jef Neve Trio, Quatre, Bruno Vansina's VVG Trio (which I've never seen live, but their CD is great), Alexi Tuomarila Quartet, Peter Vermeersch's (from X-Legged Sally) Flat Earth Society and, more recently, Rackham. When I learned that Teun was starting his own group(s), my hopes were immediately very high: from the personnel, it was clear that he was going in a weird-improv-rock direction; from my interactions with him over the years, I was sure it would be anything but run-of-the-mill. Othin Spake's Beurs Café show exceeded my expectations.”

Bio’s

Teun Verbruggen:

After getting fed up with having to play always the same fills in rockbands he was getting interested in jazz-and improvised music. After two summercourses with dre pallemaerts he went to the concervatory of Brussels were he took lessons with Hans Van Oosterhout. Since graduating from this school in 1999 he started working as a sideman in lots of different bands and musical Styles. His searching for a personal touch and wanting to explore all possibilities of playing music and drums, his lack of boundaries and styles and trying to find fresh sounds and freedom in collectif improvisation made him work with:

Alexi Tuomarila 4tet and Trio, Jef Neve Trio, FES, VVG trio, Karanova (featuring Kitchen Motors from Iceland and Mauro Pawlowski), Molo Trio, Jambangle, Rackham, Pascal Schumacher 4tet, “4”, JojoBa, Streams,Silent Song, Jozef Dumoulin Trio,...

Being sideman was at a certan point not enough any more and he putted some own projects together with whom he wants to explore other ways of improvisation and playing music. Discovering Mike Pattons Fantomâs, Alas No Axis and Jim Black and other really cool bands got him hungry for more experiment with punk, noise, free. Eager to explore other ways of playing drums and music gave following result:
Hated by the jazzpolice and liked by myself and a few others!!!! Proudly Presenting:
Othin Spake, an improvisation Trio with Mauro Pawlowski and Jozef Dumoulin.
Futhark, an eclectic jazzband with Tobias Klein, Raphael Vanolie en Gulli Gudmundsson
Nozzle Slag featuring Trevor Dunn (Fantomâs, Trio Convulsant, Electric Masada, Mr Bungle,...), Hilmar Jensson (Thyft, Alas No Axis,...) and Jozef Dumoulin.

Teun tours a lot with some of these bands. Played on Festivals in Scandinavia, Australia, Mexico, Spain, Italy, South Africa, Portugal, Iceland, Canada, Japan, Bermuda’s, England, Tunesia, Marocco, France ...
He was playing on the EuroJazzfestival in Greece with Alexi Tuomarila, Jef Neve, “4” and Pascal Schumacher and played on the same festival in Mexico City with Jef Neve.
Teun Was also invited by Jazz Middelheim to open their 25 Jubileum Festival with the program called “Around a Drummer” and he also got a “carte Blanche” at the 2005 Time festival, Gand

Some of the bands won several Prizes like The Jazz Hoeilaert first Prize with Alexi Tuomarila, Tremplin jazz 1st Prize with Alexi and Pascal Schumacher and the Klara Muziekprijs with Jef Neve for their record” it’s gone”
