Album Notes

People Project is a group based in Canada and in Mexico showcasing a style rooted in a combination of genres where rhythms of afro-american influence meet the harmonic language that is present in blues and jazz, all while lyrically exploring the four most popular languages of our continent: English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Founded in 2005 by Mexico City's Gabriel Bronfman and Ottawa's Philippe Lafreniere in collaboration with Steven Patterson (Ottawa) and Maria Emilia Martinez (Mexico), People Project has worked together on numerous occasions both in Canada and in Mexico. The original material that makes up their repertoire was written, arranged, produced and is interpreted by Gabriel Bronfman and Philippe Lafreniere with the participation of special guests and other collaborators, mainly with the use of acoustic and electro-acoustic instruments, esp. voice, guitar and cajon, saxophone and flute.

Functioning as a vehicle for expressing our internal struggle as human beings in the 21st century against the dehumanization of our people, the hypocrisy of our times and the destruction of our natural environment, not only in our respective cities but all around the globe, the idea of People Project allows us to reflect on our daily life in the urban environment in a critical, positive and constructive way and respond on an artistic level as citizens of the Earth as opposed to nations. We are celebrating this through our new and original style of music.

2006 DEBUT

People Project has just recorded their debut CD featuring eleven original compositions recorded at MCO Studios in Mexico City and mastered by Ron Bousted with Precision Mastering in Los Angeles, California. The group is currently fully independent and unsigned.

Gabriel Bronfman: guitar, bass, vocals, percussion
Philippe Lafreniere: vocals, percussion, guitar
Steven Patterson: tenor saxophone, percussion
Maria Emilia Martinez: flute, vocals, percussion

Other collaborators include:

From Canada:
Zakari Frantz: flute, alto and soprano saxophone, percussion
Pierre Chrétien: melodica, accordion

From Mexico:
Natalia Lafourcade: electric guitar, melodica, vocals
Danny Bronfman: percussion

From Brazil:
Rommel: nylon-string guitar, cavaquinho, vocals

As a result of the distance between countries, People Project continues to develop in new and interesting ways. Original members in both Mexico and Canada work closely with other collaborators and special guests from their respective countries and elsewhere and continue to innovate original material as well as write and perform. Accordingly, the group's original inter-cultural nature, sound, and philosophy continues to grow and flourish.
