Album Notes
Born in Milan, Italy, Pepe Maina released his first album in 1978 and has been particularly active in the 90's releasing many albums on is own label. In Pepe's own words, "I have attempted to create and translate into music, atmospheres and images absolutely anti-commercially".
This is extremely well done instrumental music in an almost "world/ambient" vein.
Maina's music is all instrumental and earlier works were all synthesizers, samples, flutes and percussion.
However guitars have also appeared in his latest recordings.
Pepe works in his own studio, named Nonsense Studio, and works largely on his own, though he has collaborated with others for movie soundtracks and TV promo campaign music.
His albums are all thus far self-released and production quality is always excellent!
Since 1995 his compositions have drawn comparisons to Steve Hillage's early post.Gong solo album, though without vocals.
Not as droney as Rainbow Dome Musick though, with more similarities to Motivation Radio or Green era.
His work has a similar, "nature spirituality."!
Pretty amazing considering there are no lyrics to give any such indications.
Relaxing, light prog that anyone can enjoy and relate to! No great challenges to understanding these pieces and you don't have to be embarrassed to have it on when your "Prog friends" drop by.
Maina's music is what you might call "light prog" in the sense of "light classical". Too melodic to be Techno, not complacent enough for New Age (in spite of song titles about whales and wolves), a little on the simplistic side for symphonic pro, and too complicated for hypnotic space music, but with aspects of all of the above.
Pepe calls it "ambient pro" but it begs to be listened to more than most music you would call "ambient".
Great detail has been paid to arrangements and recording techniques.
The sound stage is immense and any instrumental fans will find great pleasure in this music.
Pepe Maina demonstrates the importance that Italian musicians play in the European music scene today as ever!
