Album Notes
This music is born out of my own very personal journey’s into the realms of radiant light and celestial sound that I have been exploring from the first moment the harp came into my life almost 20 years ago. As a sacred instrument that has been used and honored the world over for mellenia the harp has a unique ability to reflect in sound the harmonic structure of the cosmos like no other instrument. It is with this intention that I sat down at my harp one night and ventured forth into the great sea of sound that reverberates thru out the universes. Without a specific destination in mind, I allowed inspiration to flow thru my improvosations, surrendering to the great unifying force of the cosmic sound current. What you hear on this recording was born on that night as one track after the next came forth effortlessly as precious gems from my heart of hearts. Like a painter of sound I worked for one year adding the other instruments and layers to bring to life this ever unfolding sonic sculpture. May the blessing be!

Peter Sterling’s self-established record label, Harp Magic Music, is named after his first album, and it is an apt description of the celestial sounds that emanate from his muse and find expression through his hands on strings.

The harp is not something that comes to my mind when I am looking for new music to listen to, but that’s where Sterling’s talent and vision come in. Ditch any preconceived notions you may have about the harp – think of jazz/new age/rock fusion with a harp instead of a guitar, keyboard, saxophone, or flute as the lead instrument, and you have the music of Peter Sterling.

The key to the success of this album is the fact that Sterling’s electric harp often sounds like an acoustic guitar, but with that extra grace and elegance that only a harp can provide. Sterling adds his keyboards, flute, and vocals to the sonic mix, augmented by other musicians on bass, guitar, tablas, flute, violin, and vocals, resulting in a sound that is heavenly while grounded in infectious melodies and rhythms.

Stylistically, the music is undeniably new age. The lyrical compositions and arrangements have flowed naturally from Sterling’s spiritual sensibilities, and the performances by Sterling and his fellow musicians impart those sensibilities to the listener, creating a safe haven that engenders peace, tranquility, and warmth.

This is one of those albums where I don’t have any particularly favorite tracks, because all of them, even with their various nuances and subtleties, are of one accord. This is both a cathartic and a pleasant listening experience from beginning to end, making this a perfect new age album.

If there is any instrument that has an instantly uplifting effect and the ability to evoke a celestial vibe, it is the harp. For harpist Peter Sterling, it is a perfect vehicle to express his artistic and spiritual vision. The music on his latest release, Patterns Of Reflection, originated as a series of flowing solo harp improvisations which he later added accompaniment to, both his own and from guest musicians. While the initial music came through in one session, he spent many months on the project. In addition to the electric harp Peter also contributes keyboards, native flute and vocals. Besides new age music influences, traces of jazz, classical, and world music find their way into the mix.

While the harp, as mentioned, can certainly conjure otherworldly realms, it is featured in a more earthy context on the opening song, “Terra Nova.” Softly plucked harp strings, chirping birds, and gentle keyboard textures create an enchanting intro before a richly reverberant gong signals the beginning of the main melody. “Onward And Upward” features both Bruce Becvar and William Aura, as well as the bass clarinet of Richard Hardy providing an almost cello-like timbre, along with subtle female vocals, tubular bells, and more. One thing that stands out to me on this song as well as throughout the album is the way there can be a lot going on with intricate interweaving of instruments, yet they are so masterfully blended as to allow the music to still feel spacious. . Perhaps the most adventurous piece, and one that invites a comparison with Swiss harpist Andreas Vollenweider is “The Grail Quest.” With different movements around a central harp figure and tasteful percussion, true to the title, the song captures a feel of boldly journeying forth on a magical mission.

I have to emphasize again how exquisite is the alchemy of instrumental interaction on this CD – an interesting integration of improvisation and orchestration. Patterns Of Reflection provides a rich listening experience that is both relaxing and revitalizing.

"Patterns of Reflection" is harpist Peter Sterling’s twelfth recording over a period of eighteen years, but I have to admit that this is the first time I’ve heard one of his much-honored CDs all the way through. The story of how Sterling came to the harp is nearly as interesting as his music. During a time when he was living outdoors in Sedona, Arizona’s Red Rock Canyons, spending countless hours at its sacred vortex sites practicing yoga and meditation amid the brilliant scenery and vast silence, Sterling experienced a vision of angelic beings in a heavenly choir surrounding him. In this vision, Sterling saw himself strumming a harp and allowing divine music to flow through him. Music had never been a driving force in his life, although he played piano, flute and guitar by ear. A week later, Sterling met a harpist who was selling a Celtic harp. He bought the harp and had one brief lesson, and then returned to the canyons where he prayed to the heavens that the music of the harp would flow through him. Almost immediately, he began to strum chords and play simple melodies as if his hands instinctively knew what to do. His first album, Harp Magic, came along ten months later and was nominated for the Naird Indie Award for Best String Album of 1994.

"Patterns of Reflection" was born out of Sterling’s personal journeys “into the realms of radiant light and celestial sound” that he has been exploring since the harp came into his life. All sixteen tracks on "Patterns of Reflection" are of a very peaceful and calming nature with some pieces quite melodic and others more ambient. The soothing sounds of the harp are optimistic and uplifting, allowing the cares of the day to disappear for a while. The music also provides a warm and comforting background for working, studying, reading, or simply relaxing. It is ideal for meditation and spiritual exploration as well. Recommended.

Peter Sterling - Another great release from one of the best New Age harp players
Patterns of Reflection is harpist/flutist/keyboardist Peter Sterling's twelfth album and marks his return to his "New Age" roots. After the world beat flavored The Sands of Time, the solo harp Silhouette and the unique wind-harp recording Circles of Light, the artist (along with a great cast of guest stars) Patterns… offers the listener sixteen tracks of cheerful bliss. Sterling infuses his music with joyfulness but also a clear sensation of relaxation to soothe the troubled heart.

Besides Sterling (electric harp, keyboards, and flute, vocals), Patterns of Reflection adds the
musical talents of flutist/wind instrumentalist Richard Hardy, violinist Dov, bassist William Aura, guitarist Bruce BecVar, table player Michael Reidinger and vocalists Ani Williams and Crystal Bliss. Despite abundant musical variety, this is a unified artistic statement, owing to Sterling's superb harp playing which dominates the CD.

Standout tracks include: The lively opening song "Terra Nova," "Onward and Upward" which builds to a pleasantly subtle sensation of crescendo, the delightful harp, violin, and flute number "Honey Dew Drop," and "The Emerald Forest" on which Sterling displays his fast tempo technique, accented by great flute melodies and lots of twinkling bell tones, painting a musical picture of walking among tall trees with sunlight peeking through the overhead canopy.

Peter Sterling has a special affinity for the harp, crafting music that, by turns, delights, soothes, and captivates listeners. Patterns of Reflection demonstrates not just his technical mastery of harp playing, but also his skill as an ensemble leader as well as his ability to vary his music without losing his prime focus.
