Musicians and physicians Coralee Thompson and Phil Maffetone have been making music for over seven years. This is Coralee’s first solo album, comprised of songs written by Phil Maffetone.
Coralee and Phil have performed throughout the U.S. at clubs, restaurants and folk festivals, and worldwide in Europe, Asia, Australia and Canada. Their music is an original and creative fusion of several forms of popular genres—folk rock, folk with plenty of country, along with jazz and bluesy-like aspects.
Music marks a significant career transition for both Coralee and Phil, who had worked full time as practitioners for many years. As a best-selling author of health and fitness books, Phil’s holistic methods came to the attention of influential music producer Rick Rubin, the late Johnny Cash and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
“I woke up one morning in 2002,” says Maffetone, “and suddenly decided to become a songwriter. I picked up the guitar began to write my own music. Then, Rick Rubin called me out of the blue five days later.” Soon afterwards, Coralee began singing and playing Phil’s songs and together they started performing.
Maffetone worked with Rubin, Cash, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers as their personal wellness guru. Interestingly, when Maffetone was in private practice in New York in the '80s, one of his patients was singer-songwriter James Taylor.
One of Coralee and Phil’s most popular events is their “Music and the Brain” presentation. They discuss how to build a better brain—at any age—and prevent the common deterioration seen in aging. They play specific songs throughout their talk to demonstrate how music stimulates many brain regions, and teach participants a unique form of biofeedback that helps control stress and improves physical balance. “Over 5,000 years ago, Chinese medicine included music as a therapy, along with other remedies,” says Maffetone. “The right kind of music stimulates the brain's alpha waves, which promotes good, sound health.”
This aural-neural connection is reflected in the broad mix of Coralee and Phil’s music. The catchy blend of acoustic guitar, piano, flutes and wonderful harmonies, creates a subtle, mesmerizing power that kisses the brain and touches the heart.
