ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Featuring German Über drummer Marco Minnemann (Paul Gilbert/Mike Keneally), keyboard virtuoso Lale Larson (Karmakanic/Electrocution 250/RHP/Timeline) and multidynamic bassist Fabio Trentini, eccentric UK guitarist Phi Yaan-Zek’s third CD release “Solar Flare” is an exceptional compositional tour-de-force played with incredible fire. Flowing from funky jazz fusion grooves to wild odd-meter drum ‘n’ bass to polymetric metal, to epic prog-rock melodies and solos, the music is a dynamic adventure that recalls the energy of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Steve Vai-like guitar intensity, Zappa style quirkiness and the passionate performances of Jeff Beck. Add to the picture the kind of exceptional guitar playing that stands up to the rigorous demands of such dynamic music. Phi's individual playing comfortably spans the gap from emotional and passionate phrasing on the ballads 'So Far Away' and 'Passion Reborn', to insane alien hyper shred guitar tradeoffs with Bumblefoot on 'Psychometamorph'. The album also features a whole cast of other guest instrumentalists - including Peter Stacey on flute/saxophone, and Gryphon bassoonist Brian Gulland among others.

Matt Williams, head of Liquid Note Records, writes:
"Solar Flare is one of the most original instrumental albums to hit the scene for quite a while. If I had to make comparison then Frank Zappa, early Steve Vai and Mike Keneally come to mind, but more in expression and attitude than in specific reference points. It's energetic, imaginative, experimental, ethnic. catchy and unpredictable, augmented by superb musicianship and featuring instruments one rarely hears in an instrumental guitar context. Yaan-Zek has imprinted his heart and soul in this project and as such, I can't recommend it highly enough."

An exquisite CD production, 'Solar Flare' is lovingly brought to you by UK based guitarist Phi Yaan-Zek in association with Geomagnetic Records and is beautifully packaged with a 12 page full colour booklet containing fantastic graphics, session details and exclusive song liner notes.

“Electrifying guitar based fusion taken to the extreme edges of the sonic Universe” Robert Silverstein, 20th Century Guitar

“This is what has made the most respected fusion efforts in history what they are, great writing, great playing equals great music.” MJ Brady, Prognosis

Seriously awesome.
This really is seriously awesome. Anyone that likes Zappa's late 70's/80's stuff will love this. It's everything I like about Steve Vai, without the stuff I don't like about it.

This is really something to write home about!
A mix between Mahavishnu Orchestra, Frank Zappa, Vai and Kennelly. This is awesome! I’d never heard of the band before, and then I stumbled across them here at CD Baby. The musicians are excellent, and the band plays as Gods. And what about the variations of the music this CD contains! It’s just brilliant – not much more to say. A must have CD worth owning if you’re a fan of the genre. The production is outstanding. This really is impressive stuff! I’m buying Phi Yaan-Zek’s ”Anomalies” now! If I could give this CD 6 stars, I probably would. Highly recommended!

Guitarist and composer Phi Yaan-Zek's latest CD Solar Flare is a very impressive collage of varying sounds and styles. At first glance at the CD I was sure I was in for another album from a young hot-shot guitarist who wanted nothing more than to shred and show off his chops for 45 minutes. However, one quick listen to Solar Flare and the opposite was quickly realized. This is a musician with immense compositional talents to go along with some strong musical chops. Yaan-Zek plays a myriad of instruments, including guitar, keyboards, percussion, and mandolin, but he also has a full cast of support and guest players on the CD to flesh out the sound and give it a full band feel. The best way to descibe the music would be early 70's Frank Zappa, by the way of Mahavishnu Orchestra, round the corner to Steve Vai, with a stop over at Mike Keneally's house, and finally a drop by at Jeff Beck's. Ridiculously complex at times, especially on the jaw-dropping "Hyperspatial", which features some insane guitar/keyboard unison workouts, as well as emotional and meditative, as on the lovely blues/jazz of "High".

The way Phi composes some of these pieces, especially the more progressive ones, really reminds me of Grand Wazoo era Zappa, as he and his bandmates get a full, rich, big band sound, utilizing many instruments. Take "Out in the Boonies" for example, which starts off with some jazzy arrangements featuring sitar & xylophone sounds, flute, and keys, before the guitarists rips in with some manic John McLaughlin styled electric leads. There's some progressive funk that shows a twist of Vai on "I Phi", crazy jazz-metal on "Psychometamorph" (featuring some sick bass work from Fabio Trentini), and some sweet lyrical guitar playing ala-Jeff Beck's Blow By Blow on the compelling "Passion Reborn". "Solar Reprise" sees the band inject some serious jazz fusion & prog elements, with sax solos, Mellotron, bassoon (played by none other than Gryphon's Brian Gulland!), piano, and soaring guitar.

There's not a clunker on this piece, just one exciting track after another. This guy can flat out play, as can his band, and he writes interesting songs filled with melody, experimentalism, and chops galore. I want to hear more already-one of the surprises of 2005!
