This was my first album. 1993. PHOEBE LEGERE was released on Dead Dog Records. It was just a collection of my demo tapes; plus 2 songs recorded live at the piano on National Public Radio in 1992; and a live recording of Toot Toot.
These songs were all recorded on a TEAC.
I produced all the stuff myself. The gorgeous guitars are by guitarist Tristan Avakian and Johnny Jewel.
It's hard to remember back that far, but in the late 80's early 90's nobody wanted girls. There were no girls on rock radio. Heart had been earlier, but by the time Heavy Metal took over it was all about boys with big hair and lip gloss. Boys who looked like girls.
When I was an emerging artist nobody wanted to see a girl with an instrument let alone a girl composer and leader. Things have changed so much! The young girls of today are so blessed with freedoms and possibilities! It's so cheap to make a CD. Anyone can do it! You can show your legs now! You can be a feminist and you can be feminine too! You can DO ANYTHING! Enjoy your music! Enjoy your beauty! Enjoy your bodies! Enjoy your power!
Made For You: I wrote this for Hello Mrs. President, my interdisciplinary experimental musical about the first African American woman president of the United States.
Lavern Baker was the star. I played the first Partner after the first husband quit. I was trying to show him the proper way to kiss a woman and he stormed off in a huff. Everybody said I was crazy to think there would ever be a female president of color. I said, I know what's coming.
Marilyn: Nat Weiss is an interesting man. He was the Beatles lawyer. He once said, "I'd rather be lowered into a pit of snakes than be with a woman."
He hated this song. I received the song in a dream from Marilyn herself. She told me the song would be an deathless as she is. Epic said, "You can't sing a song about kissing a woman." Uh. Wrong. Marilyn became a hit on college radio 2 years after Epic dropped me.
Pictures on the Radio This had guitar on it. I'm so glad I took it out of the mix. This song is a personal favorite of mine. I added my paintings to the video I made. It is on Youtube. I made the video myself at Rafik. I didn't have a camera so I used his flatbed for taking pictures of slides. I stood in front of it holding my paintings and danced.
Lamborghini I wrote this song after riding in a Lamborghini with Rocco the magician. He was going about a 100 around this crazy curvy roads in Italy.
Tristan is amazing on this. We tried to give it a Euro disco feel. Mark Andrew told me he likes this song. Mark is the husband of Gene Robinson, the gay bishop.
