ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Born in Brighton, England and now hailing from Western Canada, Phontaine released 'aqui' in late 2001 under the name 'earball'. The appeal of the album reached all over the globe. "I just tried to make something familiar but fresh, something I'd like to listen to". Phontaine doesn't take a conventional approach to creating music; " I don't listen to music as most people do, I've always absorbed tones and timbres before notes and arrangement. I blend instruments, ambience and sounds and maintain the sonic quality of their era. I hope this brings a sense of nostalgia to the listener."

"It's electronic music for sure, but less abrasive than alot
of the stuff out there, I want it to sound as warm and authentic as possible, like warm 70's electronic music but with some new modern tones mixed in."

After the indie success of 'aqui', Phontaine had songs released on the compilations 'Blue Light One' (Upstairs Recordings/Nettwerk) and 'Global Groove'(Sugo Music) alongside Thievery Corporation.

I worked with some amazing musicians on this album, Nadia Clark (vocals) Ben Karcz and Chris Ledrew (Percussion) and Rob Johnson (stand-up bass). Without them this disc would not have such great 'humonic' feel. I also did alot of field recordings when traveling that I mixed in to certain tracks, it can add
an amazing depth to a song.

His tracks can also be heard on film and T.V (The O.C,Sacred Planet IMAX,Las Vegas, Tru Calling, Windfall).

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeet!!!
Great cd. The vocals are warm and smooth and never leave you cold.THe music is a chill/jazz/D&B mix all packed on one fantastic cd. The sound quality, recording, composition, eveything about this cd is great. Get one for yourself and a friend.

Amazing sonic journey
This disc is one of the best music buys I have made this year. I am a big fan of downtempo music, and have found a new home with this CD. It spent the first week or two in all my CD players non-stop until some more new music arrived. I'm still addicted to the vocal tracks...they're haunting and warm and easy to get lost in.

Simply Awesome
This is an awesome CD. Heard the music on a film, checked the sounds on the website, bought the CD and never turned back. Great down beats that simply keep it chill but enough of everything else to keep you constantly moving. Debated giving it five stars and maybe I should have. Buy it, you won't be disappointed!

Awesome
An amazing cd to have playing when just relaxing or hanging with the friends. The music is great, and probably the best I've heard in a long time. I recommend it!

This album is very refreshing - like a warm bath for the ears.
Originally from Brighton - home of Fatboy Slim and known as “London-By-The-Sea” - Grant Baldwin aka Phontaine was actually raised in Vancouver, and his self-titled debut album is very refreshing - like a warm bath for the ears.

“I listen to tones and timbres before notes and arrangement” says Baldwin, and this comes across clearly – this is a multi-purpose and subtle mix of dance, electronica, ambient and jazz, looking far up and above the dancefloor.

It’s structures and moods are cinematic too, and it reminds you of eclectic film composers like Simon Fisher Turner and the Sasha and Digweed “Northern Exposure” series from a few years back. It’s no surprise when you find that he had a track in the IMAX film Sacred Planet – a rare privilege. I think more are on their way.

Excellent
First heard Phontaine tracks on Halfway to Nowhere & the Collective MTB DVDs. The rest of this album doesn't disappoint & is now a firm favourite on my hard drive.
