About The Music
Pia Silvi\'s music is highly original, really atmospheric, haunting and visual. Her approach is very inventive and there\'s something compelling about this music, something special. Sometimes complex, but never inaccessible, she incorporates a truly eclectic range of influences and styles, to produce wonderful textures and layers with various keyboards, percussion, instruments and unusual beats.
She works like an alchemist so that everything is in the right amount and in the right place. She adds to this careful blend her voice which is also an instrument of exceptional versatility and beauty. Her lovely titles are all part of the experience too, like poetic little pictures that invite you into their worlds..... She can be mysterious and dark, magical and captivating and, in an understated way, this very interesting contemporary music is quietly remarkable.
About This Album
Virtually Handsewn - the title itself is wonderful, and the album artwork is so right for the story inside - is Pia Silvi\'s fourth release. It has been described as \'stunning, a quantum leap from her previous releases\' and as \' a perfectly judged combination of live playing, electronic sounds, effects and her voice. Unlike her previous releases, on this album she places her voice at the core of things, and it is some voice. Virtually Handsewn is certainly her most evolved work to date and the musical journey she takes is breathtaking.
Some Reactions To The Album - Sources/Various.
The whole album is very strong and full of atmosphere, with lots of \'goose bump\' moments. There are some truly outstanding tracks here including: \' A Night In Crakow\' described by Pia Silvi as her \'gesture of love to Poland\' the track is almost hypnotic as the strings, bells and her unreachable voice soar into the night sky, as you imagine the beautiful city of Crakow on a cold Polish winter night.
\'A Boy And A River\' - heart stopping sadness - ambiguous and fragmented lyrics address a very difficult issue. Pia Silvi manages to completely avoid any sentimentality, and her sensitive approach results in something sublime. The combination of a slow tabla beating time, joined by organ and keyboards is perfect for the whole feeling of this brave and moving song - the production and mix couldn\'t be better.
\'I Scared\' an ambitious track with a stunning arrangement, almost theatrical, it is so interesting the way the beats and textures also tell the story, along with the sparse and repetitive lyrics. The meaning emerges slowly but there\'s a lot of space left for people to make their own interpretation. The track is a world away from the kind that tells us what we should think about those big issues in our society.
Also check out the seriously beautiful \'They Are Only Avatars\' for Pia Silvi\'s flowing, other worldly and delicate harmonies alongside a simple piano and military style drum, just so gorgeous, and let the impossibly pretty \'Warm Hearths And Sleeping Cats\' enchant you. \'Imaginary Cossacks\' will take you back in time...and can someone please use it as a soundtrack for an animation!
Virtually Handsewn is an album to discover, and is the perfect introduction to the music of Pia Silvi. You can take your time with this album -it is something you can select individual tracks from, to get to know them, or, you can sit back - ipod in ears- and take the whole journey to see where it leads you........
