ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The swedish, Gothenburg based Soul duo no1, Paul Mac Innes & T.B.O.I. now make their self titeled album available worldwide. This album expresses their love for soulful music and the result is their very own soulful sound, carrying influence of Jazz, Hip Hop and RnB. (Although they have been likened to acts ranging from Steely Dan to Bilal, Amp Fiddler and Curtis Mayfield.)

Having earlier created a ”buzz” on Nik Westons Mukatsuku imprint with a 7” vinyl printed in only 300 copies, Paul Mac Innes & TBOI have received airplay and attention from world famous DJs & Urban magazines (Such as Gilles Peterson, Francois Keworkian, Dj magazine and Blues & Soul Magazine).

The new international version of the album contains three bonus tracks. One a remix by Gothenburgs own Beatr8. The album was previously released in Japan only, through p-vine records (2007).

Paul and T.B.O.I. have been heard and featured on projects such as, Gospel legend Andraé Crouch, Georgie Fame, Swell Session, Ernesto, Stray, Little Dragon, the Soul togetherness compilation, Bennson, The Bamboos and a number of swedish artists.

Since young years Paul has had a deep and affectionate love for soul music, hip-hop and gospel. It is in the fusion of these styles you´ll find Pauls´ passionate vocal style. Björn Almgren aka T.B.O.I. (The Brother Of Invention) is a well known Swedish jazz saxophonist. Through the years he has made connection with a wide array of musical genres and has toured much of Sweden and Europe. Also a talanted drummer, Björn has been involved in a number of settings exploring everything from reggae to soul, RnB and hip-hop. Joined together while playing in a live hip-hop act they discovered a common love for music, which eventually evolved into a creative collaboration between the two. The result is their very own soulful sound with influences of Jazz, Hip Hop and RnB.

Superb collection full of funky bass, smooth sax, and strong vocals
“Paul Mac Innes & T.B.O.I.” is an impressive self-titled release from the Swedish duo comprised of vocalist Paul Mac Innes and saxophonist/drummer Björn Almgren, also know as T.B.O.I. (The Brother Of Invention.) Their sound is a highly polished blend of rock, jazz, pop, soul, and R&B that is radio-ready. Just one listen to this album and you realize that the primary focus here is on creating well-written songs with lovely melodies and performed with a high degree of musicianship. The production is clean and professional throughout, with a pleasing lack of overproduction and tricky effects. “Welcome to The Bunker” is a strong opener, with a silky soul groove and vocal harmonies reminiscent of Steely Dan. The vocals are incredibly strong throughout, beautifully layered to produce the desired effect on each track. Listen to the superb harmonies on “Need” and “Time?!” for great examples of this. “Even Though” has a definitive gospel flavor, showcasing the group’s versatility. The rhythm section is extremely strong on this entire album, with funky bass lines and in-the-pocket drum grooves throughout. “What You Do” features the melodic saxophone of Almgren along with his tasteful, inventive drumming. “Paul Mac Innes & T.B.O.I.” is a creative collaboration between two very fine musicians, and the product they have produced is a very original and enjoyable form of soul music. Fans of Steely Dan and Sly & The Family Stone will want to check “Paul Mac Innes & T.B.O.I.” out.

Review in Manifesto magazine (UK)
After a release on Japanese label PVine, Europe finally gets this album from the Swedish duo with its Jazz and Soul influences. Paul Mac Innes has one of the most distinctive voices around, a passionate, fragile, cracked voice that works well with the lyrics - almost a male reflection of Amy Winehouse without the angst - and those two voices would blend together so well. The album includes the two tracks from the cult 45 on Mukatsuku records and the album is a fantastic extension of that with soul, hip-hop and R&B influences. Björn Almgren aka T.B.O.I. (The Brother Of Invention) is a well known Swedish jazz saxophonist and drummer exploring everything from reggae to soul, RnB and hip-hop. Joined together while playing in a live hip-hop act they discovered a common love for music, which eventually evolved. The result is their very own soulful sound and yes it\'s a unique sound - true music for grown up people who aren\'t swayed by fads. This version of the album - (if you already have the Japanese version) has three bonus tracks - You Make My Sunshine, Welcome To The Bunker (horn version) and Even Though ( Beatr8 remix). This is one of those reflective albums that washes over you gradually and gets under your skin - Donny Hathaway is a major influence and it shows but this is edgier stuff and will stand the test of time because it has its own feel, its own life and its own unique soul. Available for download on itunes and Amazon and very soon on physical CD - miss it at your peril.

Review Soulchoonz.com
2008 may be drawing to a close but the quality soul shows no sign of abating. I have recently raved about the excellent Paul Mac Innes who guested on the brilliant “I Need Music” on Bennson\'s CD (also reviewed here on Soulchoonz.) Devotes of the duo will know that this album – minus the three bonus cuts – was released on P-Vine in Japan last year, so it is great to see the album get a wider issue. If you are not familiar with this wonderful duo then let me start by saying that they make the most awesome, moreish and soulful music, and all out of their home base of Gothenburg in Sweden! The set contains nods in a lot of black music directions, be in Jazz, soul or Hip Hop, and I thoroughly understand those who compare them to Steely Dan although there is definitely more soul within their make-up as you will hear. Odd though the first track may sound, “Welcome To The Bunker” contains everything that the quality soul music devotee would and should want. The slap bass, early 80s groove and soulful harmonies are to die for. It gets better though! Check the delightful and intoxicating laid back vibe of “Even Though” with it\'s strong piano and vibes. I can imagine the likes of Blaze recording this for their “25 Years Later” set, it really is that good!

Album ArtworkA song I am really sold on is the brooding, simple but devastating “Time”. This melody, led again by the pensive piano, is straight out of the Joslyn or Brown Baby Girl bag (also available through Soulchoonz!) and is real, true deeply rooted REAL Soul Music. All out of Sweden! Fantastic, and even more reason to visit! The jazzy “What You Do” has a real Hip Hop influence and I can even imagine the likes of George Duke nodding and smiling in approval. Vocally, George would hear echoes of his own style, pitch and phrasing, maybe with a pinch of Regis Branson thrown in for good measure! Excellence abounds with the atmospheric and very 70s “Run Away”; it\'s fluid beats, organ and slap bass personally hits me where I need it to. It\'s a song I have played to death. You\'ll soon understand the Steely Dan comparison with “You Know What To Do” - Think their superb “Aja” album and you\'re not far wrong. If you love the warm \'recorded live in one hit\' feel a la Elizabeth Sheppard then “Let\'s Dance” will quench your musical tastebuds, and for afters enjoy the VERY Steely Dan-like “You Make My Sunshine” which also owes a lot to the style of Big Brooklyn Red – think “Paradise” and there you have it! The 3 extras, including the aforementioned cut, add extra value – especially the horn mix of “Welcome to The Bunker” which is excellent. Lovers of quality music should be without doubt: this is the real deal and will be enjoyed now and in many years to come.
