Album Notes
POKER ALICE: American Rock Made In Switzerland!

Trends and faked attitudes are not their business. And these four instrumentalists and their singer do also not need cool images and scandals. POKER ALICE prefer more to convince with melodic mainstream rock with a timeless touch, which sounds more American than some other productions from the USA and even though have their own character. Not only their until now released albums but also their energetic live shows put them into the hearts of their fans which estimate good rock music with a bit folk and country in it.

"It's a long way to the top" says Monika Schär. In her description on the website the loud-voiced singer gets more detailed about the goals of the five-piece group. POKER ALICE do not want to play in one of the Swiss stadiums; they want to play in the Madison Square Garden in New York, which is a sacred rock temple for generations of fans. But POKER ALICE would not be POKER ALICE if they would work grim to reach their goals. A big portion of winking and a lot of fun are part of the motivation of Charlie Midnite, Daniel Schwarz, Dieter Senn, René Hunziker and Monika Schär. They want to get the maximum out of a song and to perform at their best at every concert.

POKER ALICE were founded in 1996. From their first production "Half Past Midnite" (1997) on they have worked hard to find their own musical identity, which could fully correspond the essence and character of the five in age and musical background different musicians. "From production to production POKER ALICE got more and more certainty in their music" Monika Schär says. "We have now found our own style and present ourselves as authentic unity on stage as well as in recording sessions."

POKER ALICE always find the way to create catchy songs with romantic colored lyrics and with the guaran-tee to join in the songs, which inevitably settle down in the ears of the audience. And there is the powerful, warm and versatile voice of Monika Schär, which could even hardened rockers make addicted, as "" writes! POKER ALICE do not like to be compared with other artists. Their catchy rock, ennobled with a bit of folk, pop and country, is hard anchored in the tradition of the big American bands of the 70s and 80s. But when the new album "Strongly Recommended!" was compared with Fleetwood Mac on the American web-site "CD Baby" POKER ALICE of course liked to read that.

The music of POKER ALICE is also esteemed on the internet, which proves the hint that in the last two and a half years over 300'000 downloads of their music could be registered on mp3. And there were already a lot of radio plays in Switzerland and Europe as well as several chart positions, for example position 1 and 3 in the Argentinean country charts with the singles "Wish You Were Here" and "Thunder Rolls".

country music roundup (england) - may 2000

poker alice is a most prolific eueopean five-some recording group (headed by a female) of peppy-rock country leanings. easily overlooked, this cd should put forth for the record, the repertoire and style of these swiss rockers showing high potential particurlarly for those who enjoy 'heavy country music'. not merely a peppy, toe-tapping background, they show considerable skill and quality. with a fine assortment of songs on urbun-country themes, the project has a bitter yet solid feel about it. pick out tracks include the opener 'thunder rolls', 'far away' and 'virginia'."
