Album Notes
With excellent press presence for their last album "Rough" and the single "Lights in the Valley", which were broadcast on radio stations both Switzerland and abroad, POKER ALICE are presenting their 5th album "Black White and Blue". Recorded are ten songs with a variety of emotions, from unpolished roughness to romantic sweetness and from catchy cheerfulness to profound melancholy. Strong feelings explode in POKER ALICE's music and the lyrics show strength and depth.

Since the first production "Half Past Midnite" (1997), the band has polished their musical identity and grown in their technical abilities, but their style still remains direct, melodic, catchy. On their new CD “Black White and Blue”, we hear the bands rocky pop sound, which proves very impressively that they are more American than some productions originating from the States.

Front woman Monika Schär will put the audience under a spell with her warm, powerful and changeable voice and breathes her soul right into her songs. Charlie Midnite (songwriter, guitar), Ivan (guitar), Dieter Senn (bass), and René Hunziker (drums) form the band into a powerful unit.

POKER ALICE have matured, become more self-confident and developed a high level of style. We notice this in the great song arrangements, their solid playing skills and the relaxed lightness of their music. The band not only convinces through their studio productions, but also through their energetic live concerts. POKER ALICE are able to transfer their material authentically and to entertain their audience. A band you will not forget quickly.

POKER ALICE are on the right track. At the "Rock-Highway Contest 2004" 72 Swiss bands competed and the winner was - POKER ALICE!

superb - sure to please
Poker Alice has the songwriting, the musicianship, and the vocals to properly present the band’s songs. Their latest release, black white and blue, is a great CD. I am an American who lives in Texas, and it is surprising to me how the songwriting can capture a U.S. southern rock quality given that the band is based in Switzerland. I have been a fan of Poker Alice since hearing “The Plane” more than five years ago. I like all the band’s albums, but “black white and blue” will take its place as one of my very favorites. Any song on this CD could potentially be a hit. I have my favorites. At the moment I like Heart of Steel and One of Kind a lot. But my favorites have switched around since receiving this album, and that is the sign of my getting familiar with a great album. Poker Alice is basically a guitar/female vocal based band. Yet, the CD has a variety of sounds. On one song, for example, there is a very clever acoustic guitar introduction that leads into a piano based underpinning for Monika’s vocals. The production and mix on “One of A Kind” is complex, but leads to a very pretty overall result. The guitar work by Charlie Midnight and Ivan throughout the album is superb. The drummer and bass player are excellent, and rhythms are varied through the disc. Monika, the lead vocalist of Poker Alice (though the last song on the disc is offered up to a male vocalist) can rock and she can sing the “break-your-heart” ballads. She has a natural loneliness in her voice, and when she sings “call me tonight “ to be “by my side”, well - - you sure want to.  Charlie Midnight and pals write and deliver appealing melodies that bring out a familiar feeling and, yet, are brand new. The songwriting is in the best of pop/southern rock tradition, and that is quite a surprise from a Switzerland band.
