ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Rajna Swaminathan's debut album aligns her performance style and artistic philosophy with the lineage of her renowned guru, mrudangam legend Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman. By manifesting the five elements - earth, air, water, fire, and space - in her rhythmic conception, she accentuates the diverse tonalities and potentials - the grace and the power - of the mrudangam. P. Ganesh (chitravina) and H.N. Bhaskar (violin) virtuosically interpret the five elements through melodic improvisation, and engage in a conversation with the mrudangam. Deeply rooted in tradition, yet incorporating certain innovative touches, The Sixth Element sparks reflection on the role of the mrudangam in negotiating the malleable divide between melody and percussion.
