Album Notes
The newest release from the Randy Simon Jazz Project - Light it Up - showcases the improvisational talents of several of the New York Capital District’s most acclaimed musicians as well as the increasingly sophisticated ensemble arrangements of physicist-turned jazz composer Randy Simon. The fourth and finest recording yet from the Randy Simon Jazz Project once again features stellar work from pianist Adrian Cohen, drummer Danny Whelchel, saxophonist Kevin Barcomb and trumpeter Pete Bellino. New to the mix this time out are versatile percussionist/vibraphonist Paul Borrello and renowned bassist John Menegon, who has played with everyone from Jack DeJohnette to Pat Metheny. With a broader instrumental palette to work from, Simon has crafted a compelling set of mainstream jazz pieces that incorporate unusual time signatures (the tricky 7/4 meter of the title cut and the exotic 5/4 piece, Counterflow), Latin elements (Getting Warmer), swing (Switchbacks), a Bill Evans-style waltz (the flute-driven Leafing Out) and even ragtime (the clever mini-history of jazz, Saratoga [Through the Years], on which Simon makes his performing debut on the nostalgic piano intro). A scientist and businessman who took up jazz piano a few years ago only to discover a facility for composition, Simon continues to up the ante with each successive release. Recorded live in the studio, Light it Up captures 75 minutes of top-flight jazz artists at the peak of their powers.
