Executive Producer Notes:
Unfortunaly Ernie died 11/07/2005 and Ron died 12/22/2005.
I will be doing an CD later this year dedicated to my friends and the music we created.
The Wichita Beboppers and there are many...in addition to Phil, Ernie and Ron, there's Rick Davis, Charlie MacLean, Luther McDonald, Jerry Hahn, Jack Gail, Jim Short, Johnny White and more...all from Wichita. I always wondered if they added some kind of jazz chemical to the Wichita water.
In 1960 Phil walked into Capriccios, a jazz coffeehouse in Hollywood where I was playing. He setup his drums, sounded great, and the two of us became musical buddies. We played lots of gigs together over the next 15 years...jazz, burlesque clubs, show biz, etc. After that our paths went separate directions, but needless to say your love for jazz never diminished.
Phil eventually left the music business and I continued my life as a working musician. We lost touch with one another and it was only through a quirk of fate that our lives came together once more, and it wasn't long before I encouraged him to get involved with music again.
After more than 23 years of not playing, Gorgo (my fond nickname for Phil) brought his drums to my house and surprisingly he sound good. His chops were down, but his original bebop concept remained alive. It was exciting to see him in action again and when we finished jamming, he smiled and said to me,"Now I'm on a mission," and his mission was to wake up at 5 am every morning to practice. After months and months of discipline and commitment Phil was ready, and FRIENDS FOREVER is the satisfying result of that hard work and dedication.
For the listener, I'm sure you will appreciate this CD...you are hearing the depth of experience from three musicians that have played with Jazz Greats such as Benny Goodman, Stan Kenton, Errol Garner, Joe Pass, Sarah Vaughn, Billy Eckstein, Charlie Haden, Billy Higgins, Joe Maini and Dave Pike among others, and such Show Biz Personalities as Sammy Davis Jr., Ann-Margret, Dinah Shore, Andy Williams, Steve and Edie, Burt Bachrach and Mitzi Gaynor.
