This album represents the culmination of my work over the past year since the 2008 Naumburg International Violoncello Competition. I have become quite close to these pieces and I feel that they epitomize the many facets of my own voice on the cello. What I find most striking about these works is each composer’s use of a condensed and concise musical language. Despite the brevity of the Debussy Sonata, he manages to fit in an enormous amount of material and yet maintain a sense of simplicity, elegance, and clarity. Similarly, Bolcom has created four microcosms within his Capriccio, with each movement portraying its own distinct world. Brahms, fresh from completing his Fourth Symphony, could not help but infuse his F Major Sonata with a similar symphonic sweep and grandeur while masterfully adhering to traditional form and structure. Lastly, the three Cassadó pieces not only are brilliant displays of virtuosity and charm but of depth and emotion as well, thereby revealing Cassadó’s charisma as both a cellist and composer. Every note counts in these succinct but profound works.
David Requiro (pronounced Re-keer-oh) has emerged as one of today’s most promising young cellists. Only 24, David added First Prize in the 2008 Naumburg International Violoncello Competition to his growing string of awards, which also includes First Prize in both the Washington International and Irving M. Klein International String Competitions. He also captured a top prize at the Gaspar Cassadó International Violoncello Competition in Hachioji, Japan, coupled with the prize for the best performances of works by Cassadó.
David has made concerto appearances with the Tokyo Philharmonic, National Symphony Orchestra, and with several orchestras from California including the Marin, Peninsula, Santa Cruz, Fremont, Diablo and Santa Rosa Symphonies. He has also been featured as soloist with the Santa Fe, Pine Bluff, and Quincy Symphony orchestras as well as with Symphony ProMusica in Boston. David’s Carnegie Hall debut recital at Weill Hall was followed by a critically acclaimed San Francisco Performances recital at the Herbst Theatre. Soon after making his Kennedy Center debut, David also completed the cycle of Beethoven’s Sonatas for Piano and Cello at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.
Actively involved in contemporary music, David has collaborated with composers Krzysztof Penderecki and Bright Sheng, as well as with members of the Aspen Percussion Ensemble, giving the Aspen Music Festival premiere of Tan Dun’s concerto, Elegy: Snow in June, for cello and percussion. He has also performed the European premieres of Lou Harrison’s Suite for Cello and Orchestra on tour in Italy with the Crowden School Orchestra.
David’s artist faculty appointments include the Giverny Chamber Music Festival, the Innsbrook Music Festival and Institute, the Maui Classical Music Festival, and the Strings in the Mountains Music Festival.
A native of Oakland, California, David began cello studies at age six and his teachers have included Milly Rosner, Bonnie Hampton, Mark Churchill, and Richard Aaron. He resides in New York City where he is a member of the Jupiter Symphony Chamber Players.
Elizabeth DeMio is well-known as a collaborative pianist, recitalist and soloist in the Cleveland area. Besides appearing in over 100 concerts annually with local aspiring musicians she has appeared frequently
with soloists such as David Requiro, John Mack, John Clouser, Michel Strauss, Umberto Clerici, Massimo La Rosa, and the Cavani Quartet. She has toured and given master classes in several cities in the U.S., Korea, and Mexico.
As a soloist she performs often with the Trinity Cathedral Chamber Orchestra, a group in Cleveland following the tradition of daytime concerts in the great cathedrals of London. With them she has performed twenty Mozart concerti and the five Beethoven concerti as well as Schumann, Mendelssohn, Ravel and others.
She has also appeared as soloist with the Orquesta Sinfonica de Veracruz and the Orquesta de la UNAM in
Mexico. As a recording artist she can be heard on the Crystal and Azica labels, most recently with works
by Samuel Adler and a soon to be released CD with works by Bernard Garfield with John Clouser as soloist.
Ms. DeMio is on the faculty of the Cleveland Institute of Music in the collaborative piano department, as
well as the staff of the Encore School for Strings and the John Mack Oboe Camp. She holds degrees from CIM and the University of Michigan. Her teachers have included Vitya Vronsky and Theodore Lettvin.
Nathaniel Yaffe is a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music, with a double Bachelor of Music
degree in cello performance and audio recording. From 2008 - 2009, he was a production intern at Telarc
International, one of the most respected names in the classical music recording industry. At Telarc, he
assisted some of the best producers and engineers in the field. Mr Yaffe is a classical music producer,
recording engineer, and editor. He has extensive experience working with stringed instruments and piano.
