The Lord's Prayer (Four 30-Minute Lectures)

by Dr. Ken Bailey

The familiar Lord’s Prayer has deep resonances in the world of which Jesus was a part. After living and teaching in the Middle East for a lifetime, Dr. Bailey exposes that world as it applies to this famous prayer.

Album Notes
This well-known prayer is composed of tightly compacted words and phrases. It opens with “Our Father…” The words are, “Our Father” not “my father.” The Old Testament has a number of prominent names for God. None of them appear in this prayer. Why not? Would not “Our Father and Our Mother” be more inclusive? How can God’s name be “made holy” when His name is already the most holy thing there is?
The petition “thy will be done” assumes that God’s will is not always accomplished. But if that is true – what happens to the soverignty of God? We are lead to ask each day for daily bread. In English the word “epiousion” is translated “daily.” But the early Church had three other major options. How can we sort them out and what exactly are we praying for? These and many other questions are discussed in these tightly packed lectures.

Superb insight! Strips layers of rote learning and reveals a gem.
Dr. Bailey hits another one out of the park. Drawing on his extensive Middle Eastern experience Bailey strips away the rote learning blindness most of us have for this prayer and reveals not only the deeper substance of the prayer, but also the courage of Him who taught us to pray, "Our Daddy,..."

Wonderful insights about the Lord's prayer. My only critique is that Dr. Bailey's style is academic, and the people who watched the series with me wished he had not belabored his points so much.
