ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Jade CDs are widely heard on national and fine music stations throughout Australia, and are recognised as a valuable resource by educational authorities as being uniquely representative of the work of Australian composers. They are manufactured in limited runs of 500 and, as stocks are therefore limited, may be regarded as collectors' items! All Jade CD covers are distinctive. Many of the early Jade CD covers (like this one) display stylish black & white photography by Nicolas van der Waarden. Most Jade CDs have an anthology format and include works by several composers. It's great to have these CDs on offer for a wider audience at CD Baby.

"AUSTRALIAN LANDSCAPE" JADCD 1068

Works by: Robert Allworth, Dulcie Holland, Colin Brumby, Eric Gross. Duration: 67.51

SUMMARY:

Holland's 1996 String Quartet is premiered by the Orpheus String Quartet. Also heard are two witty short works by Gross, Allworth's short work for cello & piano inspired by the novel "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand; and the re-mastering of his "Australia Suite" , a musical tour of many places across the continent, played by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra conducted by Patrick Thomas.

MORE DETAILS:

DULCIE HOLLAND (1913 - 2000)

Tracks 1,2,3 & 4. STRING QUARTET (1996) Composer's notes:
"The music is based on a 4-note theme which is referred to in many guises throughout the 4 movements. It is first heard at the beginning of the first movement, then slightly extended at the beginning of the second movment. It is the main material of the third movement, extended again and in the fourth movement it comes again more rhythmically emphasized."
1st movement: Lento moving into piu Vivo
2nd movement: Andante
3rd movement: Light and Dance-like
4th movement: Allegro
Performance by the Orpheus Quartet

ROBERT ALLWORTH (b.1943)

"AUSTRALIA SUITE" (1974).
The work consists of nine movements as follows:
Track 5. Sunrise At Meekatharra (Western Australia)
Track 6. Morning In Port Augusta (South Australia)
Track 7. Interlude In Caims (North Queensland)
Track 8. Midday In Mordialloc (Victoria)
Track 9. Afternoon In Maroochydore (Queensland)
Track 10. Interlude In Kalgoorlie (Western Australia)
Track 11. Sunset Over Monash Park (New South Wales)
Track 12. Twilight At Sandy Bay (Tasmania)
Track 13. Evening In Alice Springs (Northern Territory).
Performance by The Queensland Symphony Orchestra Conducted By Patrick Thomas. An Australian Broadcasting Corporation Production - Recorded 8/9/74

Track 15. ATLAS SHRUGGED (1993). For 'cello & piano, completed in October 1993, dedicated to the memory of the American writer Ayn Rand. The musicx is an elegy written in 12-note technique and displays the lyrical quzlity of the 'cello with the piano in an accompanying role. Ayn Rand was one of America's best known writers and her book THE FOUNTAINHEAD was made into a Hollywood movie.
Performance: Gary Williams, ;cello; Betty Beath, piano.

ERIC GROSS (b.1926)

Track 16. MICHAEL'S MEANDERINGS (1996). Composed for and dedicated to the 'cellist MICHAEL HOOPER, this brief work exploits some of the 20th century techniques and effects which can be produced on the two instruments involved. The virtuosic Mandola part was written especially for ADRIAN HOOPER. Both artists are heard in this recording.

Track 17. SYDNEY HARBOUR BLUES (1989). A very simple jazz-style piano piece written for Australian pianist Sally Mays. It is meant to appeal to children of all ages.
Performance: Ray Lemond, piano.

COLIN BRUMBY (b.1933)

Track 14. SLOW MOVEMENT - FLUTE CONCERTO (1975)
A perfect example of the composer's gift for melody and effective orchestration together with virtuosic writing for the flute.
Performance: Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, conductor, Hiroyuki Iwaki.

Buy it for the Holland String Quartet
The pick of the works on this disc (not that any are bad) is definitley the String Quartet. Buy it for that and you won't be dissappointed.
