A Really Fun Album !
The CD, in my view, merits mention on at least 3 levels. Most importantly, the music, but also the whole production/funding and the , I think, unique packaging.
Firstly the music :
When Grammy time comes around there will, no doubt, been strong pressures to recognise that Diana Krall has strayed back to the thirties in search of entertaining music. 'Do Something' does that with a cast of players and musical lineup that instinctively fits in that genre - and yet offers variety and a fresh approach on every track and would get my Grammy nomination.
Without space here for a track-by-track analysis I'll just say that tricks like using hitherto unknown verses and unusual tempos come off extremely well here (e.g. 'Three Little Words' and 'A Porter's Love Song To A Chambermaid'), or unknown ( to me) songs by well-known writers (Ralph Rainger's 'What Have You Got That Gets Me' and 'Show Your Linen Miss Richardson' - with a Johnny Mercer lyric !).
The musical variety mixes voice and tenor guitar/bass, two tenor guitars and, on many tracks, Randy Reinhart roaring or noodling or nudging, with his inspired cornet trimmings and Stefan Vasnier's occasional piano.
Throughout, of course, we have Hanna's voice taking care with every carefully selected word ... She really is a model for lyric delivery.
Oh - and about that production - this was a 'Kickstarter' project - and deservedly attracted 160% of the necessary funding - those things can REALLY work if you have generous sponsors!
The packaging is in the form of a folded cardboard sleeve - with very high quality printing but cut, seemingly, from one large sheet, folded to make a firm package which needs no inner sleeve and has all the notes cleverly printed on the single side of the original card. Should be economic - yet VERY classy.

"Do Something" is my second CD of Hanna Richardson's vocals. This new album has a few standards and little-known tunes such as "What Have You Got That Gets Me", "Romance Without Finance", and "Show Your Linen Miss Richardson." Bravo to Hanna and Phil on their new album-- wonderful addition to my ever-expanding vocal collection.
