ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
THE ANIMAL YEARS:

“…there is no limit to the depth and ambition of his songs, whether he is confessing a simple crush or following his thoughts on a long, Whitmanesque incantation…”
—The New York Times

“Close your eyes while listening to parts of Josh Ritter's new CD, The Animal Years, and you could swear you're hearing a young Bob Dylan, or perhaps Bruce Springsteen.”
—NPR’s “Morning Edition”

“…three-and-half-minute nuggets of transcendental goodness carved from the marrow of life’s joys and tribulations.”—Details

“…Ritter’s most fully realized album yet…”—Paste Magazine

“As far as I’m concerned, Josh Ritter is three for three. This singer and songwriter from Moscow, Idaho has released his 3rd CD, its called The Animal Years and its another winner.”—NPR’s “All Songs Considered”

“It's the folk-rock troubadour's most intensely political, deeply personal, and darkly ambitious disc yet, full to overflowing with mad, whirling rushes of apocalyptic poetry …bold statements… and stark, solitary moments… that showcase the range of
Ritter's gifts.”—The Boston Globe

“…sumptuous, sweeping arrangements to go along with his ruminative road stories and
stream-of-consciousness, Dylanesque folk.”—Entertainment Weekly

“How refreshing and inspiring it is to encounter a young artist whose achievements match his ambitions.”—Washington Post

“…The Animal Years is clearly a portrait of an artist coming into his own.”
—Harp Magazine

“When people talk about breakthrough albums, this is what they mean.”—The Onion

Bruce

intimate & epic
Thin Blue Flame was the first Josh Ritter song I heard and I was struck by
its progression from intimate to epic. It took a couple years before I
heard the whole album, and when I did I was sorry I didn't seek it out
sooner. Every song is a gem.
