Julie Powell is a composer, songwriter, singer and instrumentalist living in Athens. After receiving her Bachelor's in Music from Washington & Lee University in 1996, she came to Athens to pursue a Masters in Music composition from the University of Georgia. She has released three albums: Music Swims Back to Me (a contemporary classical song cycle for soprano and
chamber orchestra based on the poetry of Anne Sexton); Riveter - Like Being Found (a pop project featuring Powell's songs orchestrated by a 7-piece
band); and Heart of a Woman (a collection of original ballads and traditional spirituals). A collection of hymns and spirituals is due out in late fall 2004. All of her albums have been released on Solponticello Records, www.solponticello.com.
Aside from her personal musical pursuits, Powell is active in the arts community in Athens and serves as the Music Minister/Worship Leader at the Morton Theatre on Sunday mornings. She is also a freelance writer covering arts and social issues, a videographer, and a graphic designer.
