Different, Fun and Creative
With "A Synth for Christmas," Rob Meurer has created a Christmas album that breaks the mold of more traditional holiday fare. It's entirely electronic (Synclavier), but it doesn't have that cheesy 1970s "listen-to-all-the-wacky-sounds-I-can-make-with-my-Moog" feel. Synthesizer sounds tend to date quickly, so it's a tribute to Meurer's skills that this disc, recorded in 1985, still holds up well.

Carillon and percussion sounds open the disc, leading into fourteen traditional favorites, with Meurer delivering tasteful arrangements of the slower Christmas hymns ("Oh Holy Night," "Ave Maria") and clearly having fun with the more upbeat songs ("Mary's Boy Child," "We Wish You A Merry Christmas,"), and concluding with what I consider to be the best track on the disc, a Meurer original titled "Christmas Past." It's a sublime, gorgeous melody with a tender arrangement, and deserves to be more widely known. I've grown increasingly jaded about Christmas music over the years, but this disc remains one of my favorites, and I even listen to "Christmas Past" all year long.

There's goofy fun to be had here, as well as music so beautiful it will give you chills. I highly recommend this one.
