Rocky Mountain Rebel Music started in the summer of 2007 in Victoria BC and has evolved to include 10 musicians from across Canada and the world. This diverse collective talent accounts for the band's high energy and full sound as well as its broad range of musical influences. Charged by Reggae, Rock, Funk, Dub, Dancehall, Punk, and World Rhythms, Rocky Mountain Rebel Music delivers an original sound that defies comparison. Shredding guitars, bubblin' keys, smooth horns, hand percussion, drums, and heavy bass form the rough and rugged foundation upon which vocals rise and fall like the tide on Vancouver Island's rocky coast.
This infinitely danceable sound has captured the attention of the Victoria live music scene with numerous sellout shows to date. In the summer of 2009 they were honoured to be the first band to play at Victoria’s 10th annual Ska Fest. RMRM then released their eponymous debut album, which was supported by a nationwide headlining tour spanning 13 dates in 6 provinces. The entire first pressing of 'Rocky Mountain Rebel Music' was sold out by the time the band wrapped this first tour, in Quebec City.
After a post-tour hiatus RMRM was back at it playing sold-out shows on Vancouver Island and the lower mainland with most notable appearances performing with Boston’s “John Brown’s Body” and at Victoria’s 11th annual Ska Festival with Montreal’s “The Beatdown” and LA’s legendary “The Aggrolites”. The rebels once again hit the road in August 2010 playing 12 shows in 14 days across BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan to great acclaim and even increasing their meager band fund! Upon their triumphant return to Victoria they focused their attention on recording their second studio album slated for release in early 2011 and supported by an overhaul of their public persona with respect to band image, promotion and marketing.
Beside our main project we also sponsor and promote free all-ages open-air concerts that support the local community of artists and unite people of different backgrounds. It is a great opportunity to have the community involved in open jams where any musician can come and perform with other artists. In the past we have provided, instruments, powered by a generator, free BBQ and a bouncy castle for children. With good karma like this it’s no wonder it’s always sunny when we play!
RMRM’s artistic vision is to combine musical styles into new permutations, blending genres and producing an altogether original sound. Ten musicians add personal flavour to this sonic melting pot, and as a result songs range in subject matter tempo, arrangement, and rhythms originate from a different types of music from around the globe. Inspirations know no borders; RMRM’s members come from BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, England, Brazil and Denmark and join forces to create something uniquely Canadian.
Our goals for 2011 are to release our second studio album and support it with local shows, a springtime tour of BC and a national tour of summer festivals. We have already established strong support in Western Canada and RMRM is ready to take the next step in their professional music careers
