“Years after breaking ground in large-ensemble Latin rhythmic jazz with his LA Jazz Ensemble (AKA Urban Ensemble), visionary percussionist Roland Vazquez continues to re-define the way we experience music on the engaging release FURTHER DANCE. Utilizing tight Quintet arrangements, Vazquez here records live to two-track, for an uncommonly energetic, “real-time” feel in emotion-spanning mini epics like “No Place to Hide This Heart.” The dynamics and spaces speak as intently as the notes on salsa-fied originals like the pulsating piano-based “Tu Sabes,” with the two-track recording lending the immediacy of the musicians playing in the same room- not just with each other, but with the listener. Vazquez also hasn’t lost his vision in selecting musicians: his Quintet, anchored by Mark Soskin on piano and Anthony Jackson on contrabass guitar (in itself adding a greater depth to the music) is highly sensitive, executing complex dynamics in in absorbing tunes like “The Path of Change.” Besides the array of multi-phased percussive compositions Vazquez also offers a pair of improvised vignettes, including the high energy percussion conversation with Ricardo Candelaria, “Sum Fun Dango.” After listening to hours of massively overdubbed, slickly engineered recordings Vazquez’ work presents a welcome opportunity to get back to the basics of live, emotionally arresting music.” (Hilarie Grey, JazzTimes, April ’97)

“Sound: A+, Performance: A / every few years, New York drummer/percussionist/composer Roland Vazquez releases a self-produced CD that fuses Latin rhythms with jazz improvisation. And FURTHER DANCE is his most satisfying album to date. Here he is accompanied by pianist Mark Soskin (Sonny Rollins pianist for the past two decades), the vastly underrated saxophonist Walt Weiskopf, Ricardo Candelaria on congas and percussion, and Anthony Jackson on contrabass guitar. Vazquez’ original compositions put a contemporary spin on old-school montunos and songos, a fresh-sounding funk/salsa/be-bop hybrid. The result is exhilarating on percolating fare like “Las Mediosas”, “Tu Sabes?”, and “The Path of Change” and is affecting on alluring ballads like “The Price” and “Beyond This Dream,” both of which showcase Weiskopf’s lyrical big-toned tenor sax and Soskin’s cascading piano lines. “Sum Fun Dango” is a spirited percussion jam between Vazquez and Candelaria. On “Duo 2” the percussionist goes toe to toe with virtuoso bassist Jackson.

I saw his big band burn up the New Have Festival a couple of years ago and his latest CD, FURTHER DANCE, is a “live” studio recording of the white hot core of that big band… Further Dance, Vazquez’ fifth CD on his own RVCD label, was captured by Sony Music engineers “live” to 20-bit 2-track with no overdubs, isolation, mixes, or board fades.
