Album Notes
Most of these songs were written over a 2-3 year time frame and all the musicians who contributed to this project have played on and with some of the best people in the music business. I was very blessed to have also met and collaborated on the songs with a song writer/producer here in San Diego who has recorded over 300 projects with many of the local favorites in this area. Here is a little bit of background on each song as they are listed on the project titled Pretty Girl an album by ron richard.

First the title came from one of the songs I wrote which is very personal to me as it is about my daughter who is a cancer survivor. When she was about 12 years old she was diagnosed and it was a very traumatic time for our family. I remember she lost most of her hair during her chemo treatments and often wore a hat to keep her head warm and hide her baldness. But we received a wig as a gift from a cancer foundation donor and the first day she wore her new wig she had on a cute dress and she ran down the stairs with a smile and said "Dont I look pretty!" And I was just help but laugh and cry at the same time. She was beautiful.
This image stayed with me for many years and I came to write the song Pretty Girl which the lyrics were co-written by my daughter. And she also did the graphics and is the person on the cover art. She is cancer free and an inspiration for this project along with the California coastline, Jerusalem and the blues.

Skyline is the first track and I wrote this after doing a bike race fund raiser for ALS along Highway 1 in California along the coastline. I remember seeing the ocean and waves were crashing along this certain stretch. The keys and sax combine to create the tension between the land and seascape. I added some Latin percussion under tones based on listening to and being influenced by Santana.

My Love for You is a song of bittersweet love and that dream that true love is something we want and need in life to feel secure and confident. I tried to capture a Beatles like ending with horns and back masking on guitar and sitars to bring this sort of 60's love and peace vibe to the tune. The keys and piano were played by my friend who performs with Rat Dog and Further. He did an awesome job with the B3 and I love the grand piano sound.

Solid Ground was a song I wrote while on flight to New York from San Diego. I was going through a really tough time in my life and wrote the lyrics and got the melody worked out on the plane. When I returned back to San Diego I met with Sergio and sat down in his living room and recorded the rough demo track. I was also really fortunate to have Bill Ray play drums on all the tracks but this one he really caught the groove down on it and sounds great. He played with Ike Turner for years and was on his Grammy Award project as well. He is super easy to work with and has such a good feel and touch for my songs. Ryan Hiller whom I met by just happening to have lunch a Prospect in San Diego one afternoon caught him playing guitar and singing, He plays Dobro and slide on this tune and gives it the Delta gritty blues sound I love which complimented my harp solos. My son Luke also plays guitar on this song did a wonderful job for his first time in the studio.

Healing Pool was written about the time I went to Jerusalem and to the Wailing Wall. I stayed there a few days and became enchanted with the beauty and mix of tension in the city. There was a pool of water people were going to and dipping their hands in and putting the water on their bodies. They believed the water had healing powers. I was inspired to write the song based on my belief in God and seeing this wonderful place. Sven Eric Seaholm actually sings lead and his dear friend Brooke MacKintosh sings harmony which gives the song such great balance with their phrasing and interpretation of the lyrics. Jeff Chimenti plays all the keys and piano parts and again just made this song special in so many ways as he is one of todays great keyboardist.

Pretty Girl the title of the project and next song was written about my daughter and she also co-wrote the lyrics. My son played guitar along with Ryan Hiller. I cant thank all that provided their parts to this song to make it a special tribute to my daughter and cancer survivors all over the world. I really enjoyed creating the layers in this song in terms of the way we added percussion and other instruments to the mix along with vocal part and ended the tune with a retro-vibe reflecting on the music from the 80's.

All This Time was a lot of fun to play and record. Bill Ray and Jeff Chimenti put together some nice grooves on the song and Ryan Hiller came up with some great ideas for guitar parts. I wrote this song about the times I have experienced over the past few years in life and marriage.

All the artwork and graphics were done by Brenn Richard.
Additional support and input on songs and structure were provided by Sergio and Sven. I really enjoyed working with them and all the other musicians who are credited on the liner notes. And a special thanks to my nephew Brett Vogel who I perform with in and around LA for his inspiration to write these songs and get them published.

Much love and peace
