ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
RON WISEMAN

Ron Wiseman was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He lived and worked in Toronto for many years but has recently moved and now calls Tel Aviv, Israel home. The third of four brothers, Ron's two older brothers Gordon and Howard, were avid and eclectic music listeners and his childhood was richly saturated with the sounds of Blues, R & B, and Rock.

His first major musical influence was at the age of 12, with the sounds of Classic Chicago Blues, and it wasn't too long after that when he started learning Otis Spann's classic piano solos. Ron's first foray into performing was playing in a Winnipeg Blues band called Cherry Red. At home, Ron often jammed on the piano together with his younger brother, Bob, who is also a very talented piano player and recording artist.

One year, Ron took a vacation to the Holy Land of Israel. While traveling in the ancient hills of Judea, Ron received a new inspiration. What resulted from that mystical experience was an amazing musical revelation that has since come to be known as Hebrew Reggae or Biblical Reggae. Soon thereafter, Ron returned to Canada with his newfound inspiration and began composing his music, eventually playing it in clubs.

In 2004, Ron Wiseman released “Mystical Mood” through Marshmellow Records, his first full length CD. The disc has generated great reviews in publications such as Lifestyles Magazine and The Jewish Tribune to name a few. The CD showcases Ron’s real life experiences and the words of the Torah he has studied over the last few years.

Ron's Hebrew reggae is a unique musical genre', that is composed of a mixture of reggae, ska, rock and roll, and blues. His lyrics are in essence, inspired by the wisdom of the Torah but seen through the eyes of a musician who has lived and loved and lost a few times. His music is original, fun, and positive and it will make you dance. His lyrics are universal, intelligent, relevant and wise.

Hundreds of concerts later, Ron and his mystical music has created a devoted following of fans that are spread out across the planet, numbering in the thousands. Fans that are from many different backgrounds, religious denominations, and ethnicities. He has shared the stage with soul legend Rufus Thomas, Country star Kinky Friedman, Shlomo Carlebach and recorded with Reggae Super Star Sugar Minott in Kingston Jamaica. Ron recently played for 20,000 reggae fans at the Boombamela Music festival in Israel. He is also co-starring in a two-hour documentary called “Searching For The Real Kabbalah. Ron continues to write and create in Israel where he is jamming his unique music on Holy Mount Zion.

Reggae reviews

a bit like Bob Dylan doing reggae, if Bob Dylan could sing.
Ron's voice is a bit like Bob Dylan if Bob Dylan could sing. In fact, tracks like "Waiting for a Miracle" and "Promised Land" sound like the type of cohesive folk-reggae fusion that Dylan might perform if had pursued reggae. The songwriting on Mystical Mood is excellent throughout: melodic and heartfelt with an intoxicating reggae vibe that will make you forget that Wiseman is Jewish. Or Canadian (not that either matters).

Jewish reggae! How’s that for something different and eclectic?
Jewish reggae! How’s that for something different and eclectic? “Mystical Mood” explores Jewish mysticism from his home in Tel Aviv with reggae closer to the Mediterranean Sea rather than the Caribbean. Ron Wiseman dubs it Biblical Reggae with words culled from the Old Testament. So I guess Matisyahu wasn’t all that unique huh?
