Playing ballads has always been considered the ultimate test of musicality and sensitivity for musicians. On All Ballads & A Bossa, Campbell proves beyond a doubt that he is the one of the most melodic soloists on jazz guitar. Supported by a group of world-class musicians of equal musicianship and sensitivity, Campbell performs a spectacular selection of ballads that have not received the recognition they deserve. The CD could be subtitled ‘ballads deserving greater recognition’.
“I was thinking that if I were a jazz DJ, I would be quite tired of playing the same standards over and over and would love to find some new songs to keep things more interesting for my audience and myself,” explains Campbell. “Some of the songs are better known than others, but the one thing they have in common is that they all deserve to be heard more often.”
Campbell handpicked a group of musicians who are masters at performing ballads and are also deserving of wider recognition. “Pianist Tony Nalker is one of the most romantic pianists I’ve ever heard. The way he incorporates classical influences into the jazz ballad context is what makes his playing on this CD truly special,” Campbell gushes. Bassist Tom Baldwin and drummer Tony Martucci both possess the sensitivity necessary to be a ballad masters as well.
With legendary recording engineer Bob Dawson at the helm, the sound of the CD is of major label quality. All these factors combine to make this a special CD that will stand out in the crowd.
