New York based guitarist, composer, songwriter and licensed music educator Royce Lopez began playing the guitar at the age of 7, performing mainly rock, pop and mainstream music. During his early and mid teenage years, he studied jazz guitar and soon began transcribing musical compositions by ear, most notably by Pat Martino, Wes Montgomery and Stanley Clarke. At that time, Royce also quickly mastered the music of rock legends Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and other top Billboard hits of the day. However, it wasn’t until his late teenage years that he began studying the classical repertoire of the Spanish Guitar, after hearing a recording of Andres Segovia.
Royce’s musical path led him to study the classical masterpieces in college and he graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Classical Guitar Performance from Hofstra University. He was then accepted to study classical guitar at the prestigious Manhattan School of Music where he later graduated Cum Laude with a Masters Degree in classical guitar performance. There he studied and performed the compositions of classical music luminaries J.S Bach, W.A Mozart and many others, in addition to taking composition lessons and was also hand chosen to perform in master classes for renowned classical artists including many Grammy Award winners. After receiving his Masters degree, he went on to perform classical guitar recitals in artistic venues all over America. Royce has also done Doctoral work in classical guitar performance at Stony Brook University, with his dissertation being how the human brain perceives sound on the auditory system, entitled “The Cocktail Party Effect-Trained Musicians Vs. Non Trained Musicians." As Royce was well on his way to a life in classical music, he realized the sounds of his youth were too alluring and after a bit soul searching, noticed his true path in music lies in writing, recording and performing different styles music.
As a guitarist, Royce is equally comfortable performing driving, energetic hard rock melodies and rhythms on the electric or acoustic steel string guitar as well as classical music on the nylon string Spanish guitar. As a Songwriter, with his experience and many years of study in classical music performance and composition, Royce blends the sounds and styles of mainstream rock and pop music. His unique mixture of charm, charisma and engaging performances draws the listener closer to the panoply of emotions heard. Drawing upon his diversified and individualistic musical path, Royce writes songs with catchy melodies, unique harmonies, imaginative guitar solos and deeply emotive lyrics. A blend between hard rock, pop, blues, folk and classical, Royce’s songwriting and guitar playing are as varying as the definition of music itself.
Royce is a certified and licensed New York State music educator for grades K-12, where he completed his music education certification from Queens College. He is also active as a freelance musician and maintains a private music studio where he teaches music lessons in guitar, music theory, songwriting and composition. His students have been accepted into colleges and universities for music throughout the country.
