SALEM were formed in 1980 in Hull, in the north east of England and can be seen as successors of proto
NWoBHM act ETHEL THE FROG (one album on EMI in 1980), for original singer and guitarist Paul
Tognola and Drummer Paul Conyers were former members of the aforementioned. SALEM kept following
the path of their predecessors with their well balanced mixture of more epic, yet catchy classic hardrock and
powerful driving proto heavy metal from their foundation 1980 to their split in 1983 and became not even
local heroes but with the years and the increasing interest of young metal fans in the NWoBHM movement
turned out to be a real cult band.
On at least three demos and a seven inch single one could follow the development of this meanwhile reformed
and very active band, material of which PURESTEEL RECORDS now release a fantastic compilation with a
tastefully restored sound that shall pave the way into a bright future for SALEM. No matter if you let the
forceful, charismatic vocals by Paul Tognola on the first demo and Simon Saxby on later recordings or the
heavy, memorable riffs and licks from the guitar section enchant you, SALEM prove to deserve their place in
NWoBHM and general metal history each second their music roars out of the speakers.
Fanatics for old british heavy metal need to reserve a space of honour in their hearts for SALEM, for „In the
beginning…“ heats up the passion for earthy, honest, handmade beat music with atomic power from the first
moment you get to listen to them
