Born and raised in the heart of the Allegheny Mountains in Southwestern Pennsylvania, Saravanan "Sav" Sankaran began playing music at an early age, having been classically trained as a vocalist from age 6, and eventually moving onto many other forms of musical expression. After hearing a record while in junior high featuring legendary jazz bassist Ray Brown, he fell in love with the double bass. In addition to double bass, Sav also plays guitar, banjo, and more! After studying at Gettysburg College and The Pennsylvania State University, he has brought his talents to the bluegrass world.
Sav toured both domestically and internationally from 2009 to 2012 with renowned bluegrass/Americana outfit The Dixie Bee-Liners, 2008 RMA's Bluegrass Artist of the Year. Sav has also played with groups such as Blue Moon Rising, The Last Complete Show, Sweetwater, Stumpwater, The Jon Stickley Trio, The Glimmer Grass Band, and many more. Sav relocated to Asheville, NC in 2009, and is one of its most in-demand bassists and vocalists.
"Back To Bassics" features legendary mandolinist Adam Steffey, twin threat Ron Stewart on fiddle and banjo, and fine Asheville guitarist Ricky Cooper, as well as vocal stylings of Balsam Range's Darren Nicholson, and Town Mountain's Robert Greer.
Aside from music, Sav has a great appreciation for the outdoors. He is an avid (some would say obsessive!) fly fisherman, and can often be found on a cold mountain trout stream or sitting at his desk tying flies.
"Back to Bassics is a strong album, and the fact that it’s Sankaran’s first solo record makes it even more impressive." -Juli Thanki, engine145.com
