ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Scotland Barr and the Slow Drags
Scotlandbarr.com
Where the collective unconscious meets a dusty west coast reality, Scotland Barr and the Slow Drags live, write and play. Gritty songs float between an old school 60/70's songwriter aesthetic and a contemporary alt-country Americana furnace blast. Their songs burn with a slight literary edge, they take you somewhere but they don't just drop you off, they bring you home again too, even if home is no place you want to be.

The group was started in 2004 originally as a studio project but quickly evolved into a full time band. Scotland Barr is the primary singer/songwriter. He fronted several NW bands throughout the 90's including "Whipping Dead Horses" and "Gage". In his current incarnation he plays a caustic acoustic warrior crafting songs that bite and crackle with intensity while maintaining a melodic edge. He has been warned repeatedly not to take voice lessons; he has been warned just as repeatedly that he MUST. His insights into the darker side of the human condition resonate throughout their songs. The Bi-polar Nature of beauty, love, hate, hope, addiction, and shattered dreams are explored with a sympathetic yet cynically brutal heart .Songs that look at a glass that is neither half empty nor half full.... but both! The lyrics take you not only through the experience but through the world.

Though led by a singer/songwriter the Slow Drags are tight as a sonic whole, capable of subtle interplay, complex harmonies, eerie melodies and a cosmic attack that will soothe you and disturb you at the same time. With influences ranging from Merle Haggard to the Magnetic Fields their sound is undeniably "classic" yet innovatively their own. The band is comprised of west coast music veteran Eugene Nucci on bass (Chiva Knevil, Fun Box and Sketchy Ted), long time Portland drummer Matt Nicely (Christine Young Band), new addition Chris Hubbard on keys/vocals and replacing the much missed Jon Itkin on lead guitar/vocals with equal talent is Charley Adams from The Sham.

Their new full length CD "LEGIONNAIRES DISEASE" was recorded and produced by Rob Stroup (Baseboard Heaters and The Imprints) at 8 Ball Studios in Portland OR. It is scheduled for National release in September of 2005 through Burnside Distribution Corp. It has been receiving regular play on NW RADIO and has won multiple awards from Independent music juggernaut GARAGE BAND. The CD contains guest appearances from an arsenal of Portland's best musicians including Steve Wilkinson (Gravel Pit and Mission 5), Rachel Taylor Brown, Marilee Horde (Golden Delicious) Derek Brown (A.C. Cotton, Stephen Ashbrook and James Low), Rich Landar (Richmond Fontaine and King Black Acid), Skip Von Kuske (Vagabond Opera), Chris Robley (The Sort Ofs and The Imprints) and Portland's undisputed king of one-man-bands, Pug Bernhardt. The release of the CD will be followed by several NW tours and a winter tour to Austin TX.

From the Boise Weekly (10/10/07)
When I first picked up the latest Scotland Barr CD, my reaction was ‘what’s not to like?’ A band named Scotland Barr & the Slow Drags, an album titled Legionnaires Disease, and a promotional note touting ‘Alt-Country from Portland, OR.’ All three got my attention.

Later, listening to the CD, I found even more to like. This album opens with the title track, “Legionnaire Disease”, featuring a lonesome pedal steel. After an impressive instrumental opening, Scotland Barr’s gravelly voice joins the mix.

The mix of warm instruments with worn vocals is an alt-country standard. I could tell right away that Scotland Barr has that formula down pat. However, you need more than a gruff-voiced lead singer and quality instrumentals to make truly great music.

Barr’s lyrics show that he’s a songwriter wise beyond his years. “Bruised Tattoo” starts with the lines, “I’ve got knots on the floor / Beneath the knots in my back / I’ll work ‘til I’m sixty / I’ll die of a heart attack.” In “A Woman’s Way” Barr laments a lost love singing, “I guess she left me a year ago / Here I am just finding out today / Well I never heard her leaving / But she always had a soft and gentle way.”

Another song, “5 Years in Nashville”, is the story of a musician trying to make it to Nashville. The song ends with a bittersweet lament following a barroom fight, “For that violation I got five years probation / No fighting, no crossing state lines / Well, they say it takes five years to make it in Nashville / Guess I have plenty of time.”

Behind the lyrics, the Slow Drags superbly blend their instruments and harmony vocals into memorable tunes. What’s not to like about Scotland Barr? Nothing. Legionnaires Disease comes highly recommended from this reviewer.
