Idle Speed

by Scott Youngberg

Sitting somewhere between Southern Rock and Americana, with a tropical flavor, these well-crafted lyrics are set inside of fun, energetic music, but nothing so loud or so fast that it gets between you and the words.

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Scott Youngberg has lived and performed in the beautiful Florida Keys since 1997. These songs are a collection of personal experience, reflective thoughts and whimsical ideas inspired by the milieu of island life.
Idle Speed is a metaphor for living, as well as an important rule for boating. If you move too fast, you'll miss so much...

These songs all got their start as acoustic solo, singer-songwriter tunes. They have been "brought to life" by the friendship and efforts of so many talented artists residing in the FL Keys.

Thanks to Steve Webb for the initial production of "Rain," "I'm Gone," and the title song itself, "Idle Speed." His performances on guitar, mandolin, bass and percussion started the project .

Jason Poff's amazing ears and technical knowledge produced the other tracks, along with his talents on Bass, electric guitar, keyboards, electronic flute (and pig hooves!) His mastering of the album is top-notch.

LYRICS

1. Morning Scott and Suzi Youngberg

This morning as the sunlight fell
Upon your sleeping head
You looked just like an Angel
As you lay there in my bed

The rays of morning sun
They filled your golden hair with light
I sighed and breathed you in (and)
Wrapped my arms around you tight

I could not help but remember how you were the night before

I pulled you even closer
Felt your breath upon my cheek
The closeness of your body
Was enough to make me weak

And then your eyes were open
They were smiling into mine
I said, “Good Morning” to you then
I lost all track of time

2. Lust (and the Rest of Our Lives) Scott and Suzi Youngberg

Bodies entwined. The weight on my mind.
makes me partially blind to the tears in your tightly closed eyes.
You tell me we’re fine, but the warning sign...

...is a little white line between lust and the rest of our lives.
Take me down in the dark with you; let me feel what you want me to do.
You can scream if you need to, or cry and I’ll hold you.
Drag me down in the dirt with you. Make me want what you need me to do.
I can scream just to please you, or cry on your pillow.

I don’t think you lied - about your wild side
you’re just not satisfied without danger to fuel your desire.
Did you know I cried? That I tried to hide...

...the fact that part of me died from the burns of your passion and fire.
Take me down in the dark with you; let me feel what you want me to do.
You can scream if you need to, or cry and I’ll hold you.
Drag me down in the dirt with you; make me want what you need me to do.
I can scream just to please you, or cry on your pillow.

Your passion’s a flame, but, the rules of this game
make me nearly insane, you can’t tell me we’re one and the same.
Don’t try to explain. I won’t feel pain...

...of you leaving again; I’ve already accepted the blame.
I'll go down in the dark with you, I know I won't be the same.
I can't live with or without You - I have a will to survive.
There’s a little white line between...

Lust and the rest of our lives

3. The Difference Scott Youngberg

You might be early or always late
You might always worry or be quite sedate
You might be winning or losing at some game
(But) Everyone is different, which makes us all the same

Some people set out to be masters of their fate
Others never go out, they sit at home and wait
But we all originate from the same template
Every individual has similar DNA

One and one are two
Two and one make three
One can make a difference
When no one else can see

Standing still or still evolving
We all have our different problems
Stand together – We can solve them (with)
The difference
It’s what we have in common.

She likes to drive, He sits at a desk
He wants to travel far, She never leaves the nest
You’re a master of your craft, maybe the best?
Either way you’re different, just like all the rest

One and one are two
Two and one make three
One can make a difference
When no one else can see

Different faces. Different Names.
Aren’t you glad we’re not the same?
Come the day - The whole world may
See the difference
Another way

4. Rain David Henry, Ned Henry

Night had fallen, we were fast asleep
Only to be wakened by a stampering sheet
Of rain falling down
From a sky of honesty

Window was open, nothing we could do
Water had blown all over our room
At first, we didn’t even know
What we had on our hands

My love is the rain

Reality falls from a darkened sky
Soaks in the ground where I try to hide
Even in the highest places
My feet are touched with water

And in the dry spells when the land is hot
It was then when I wish I hadn’t forgot
The beauty of the soft showers
Laid across the land in the Springtime

My love is the rain

When it hits me hard it hits me in the face
I live my life by the moment and trace
Back on all the little things
That have brought me here

So save a place where I can see
The hard, fast showers of love’s purity
Bring my peace
Back to an open soul

My love is the rain

5. Idle Speed Scott Youngberg

The slack tide
Makes for a good ride
Been stuck inside
Waiting for the sun

I know
When the wind blows
And the rain won’t go (away)
It isn’t much fun

But today looks like the perfect day
To launch my boat and sail away
No clouds above, the weather’s passed
(And) the sea looks like a sheet of glass

Floating nowhere, feeling fine
No destination in my mind
Where I’m at is where I’ll be
All I need is idle speed

Won’t touch
My throttle
Just open
Another bottle

Slow Down
See things clearer
(When) The surface
Becomes a mirror

I can’t imagine starting her up
If I make a wake, it’s seven year’s bad luck
So I’ll stay on hook and if I need
I’ll only move at idle speed

Floating nowhere, feeling fine
No destination in my mind
Where I’m at is where I’ll be
All I need is idle speed

6. Adrift Scott Youngberg

I can’t swim on my own anymore
It’s fathoms deep, I’m far from shore
I can only ride the tide
Remain adrift and abide
So hold me up, or set me free
To be swallowed by the sea

I’m adrift. Adrift.

I want for you to understand
I want to want to find dry land
I want to want to reach out my hand
But you’ll just have to take it
If you want me to want to make it

Adrift. Adrift.

Short of supplies on a raging sea
No volition, No crew
Floating here to wait and see
If I drown in the deep or in you

Keep on keeping it all inside
When a word could set me free
Have mercy on me now
I’m at the mercy of the sea
I could be your warm, dry breeze
If only you would save me
I’m not seeking safety

Adrift. I’m adrift.

I cant swim on my own anymore

7. Now to Then Scott Youngberg

In the days of youth I thought it was the truth
If this was as good as it got, (well,) that’s OK
When things got rough what we had was enough
And that’s how it would stay
When the times got good I never understood
That it wouldn’t always be that way

*Chorus Time keeps moving on
Now is now the past
Every Now becoming Then
Faster than the last
Everyday I see
Less time in front of me

I howled at the Moon but settled too soon
(Now) Each passing year I’m disappearing
I want my hunger back for the time I’ve still got
Don’t get a “Do Over” or another shot
(Still don’t know what I want to be…)
How can this be? Complacency?
At 43, I can see (the end of)
My immortality

*Chorus

The World’s not what I was taught it should be
What I was told, wasn’t reality
The prices of the vices keep adding on
To the cost of life, but then they’re gone
If I have to believe all the stories I’m told
Guess I better grow up, before I grow old

*Chorus

Don’t really have the blues
With no retirement to lose
I’ll keep wearing out my shoes
Until I can’t walk.

8. By the Way Scott and Suzi Youngberg

There's something about you
That makes me smile even if I'm blue.
You have a way of knowing what to say
And by the way, I'm in love with you today.

There's something about you
That makes me think your love is true.
You have a way, You make me want to stay
And by the way, I'm in love with you today.
(I'm in love with you today.)

When I first saw your face all I noticed was your smile
And I thought how nice it was to watch it for a while.
And when your eyes looked into mine I knew that I was lost -
But I also knew a face like that could well be worth the cost
And by the way, I'm in love with you today.

Will you take me in your arms and say you love me too?
Can you say you know just what I mean, and know just what to do?
And if I had a wish, I'd wish to always feel this way
The way I feel for you today, but , anyway
I'm in love with you today

And then I heard your voice, and the sweet way that you sang
And your words were a soft caress that fell on me like rain.
And then you reached out to me and you put your hand in mine
And you said that life's a song and we were the next line
And by the way, I'm in love with you today.
By the way...

9. Govmn't Cheese Scott Youngberg

I used to believe
The Powers That Be were looking out for me
Was way too Naïve
When I reflect I start to suspect…
We’re building our debt
(Though no one’s saying it yet)
We’re living asleep
Which makes us slaves for them to keep

Our Fathers gave us a republic
And challenged us to keep it
I sometimes wonder if they’d be sick
If they were here to see it
Pursuing liberty and life
Build a home, find a wife
Raise a family, proud and strong
But lately there’s been something wrong

*A change has occurred, just not the one we wanted *CHORUS
I can’t find the word, I’m just a little scared and haunted
If happiness is the root of it
I need some help with my pursuit of it
So get in line and help yourself, please
To the last of the Gov’mnt Cheese

Most of my blood and all of my sweat
End up going to Big Government’s percent
And anything I put away
Loses value every day
The left hand working against the right
This didn’t happen overnight…
We let it go and gave it up
So stay in line and stay shut up

(*CHORUS)

Everybody’s waiting for change
But not if they have to rearrange
The life they’ve always known
But I think it can be shown
The middle keeps losing again and again
The poor have given up on waiting for when
The rich could be richer
If they’d see the big picture
And not have to win by so damn much

11. I'm Gone Scott and Suzi Youngberg

This time, spent here in your arms
gives meaning to this game.
This time, home safe and warm
Helps to keep me sane
But then the night is gone
It's time to be moving on
It's morning and I'm gone

When I'm here alone with you,
I can cry without shame.
When I'm surrounded by your love
You call me by my name
But then the night is gone
It's time to be moving on
It's morning and I'm gone

From the road I hear you crying
What can I say?
I'm farther away every day
But home is where my thoughts are flying
On wings of love
Can you feel how hard I'm trying?
Is it hard enough?

Someday, I'll find a better way to show you how I feel - You make my life real.

Tonight, I'll stand and play my songs
And drink another beer
It's right but sometimes I feel wrong
God I wish that you were here
But now the night has gone
It's time to be moving on
It's morning and I'm gone

I'm gone.
