Seconds Before Landing Releases
Full-Length Album: The Great Deception

Ambient rock collective releases futuristic concept album to high anticipation

UNITED STATES – Seconds Before Landing, the ambient rock collective formed by composer and musician John Crispino, has released its first full-length album. The 14-track concept album, entitled The Great Deception, features original music from Crispino, as well as a number of guest talents from notable musical followings.

The Great Deception follows the conceptual idea of a dystopian world, set not far into the future. Drawing on elements from science fiction, the album paints a story of a post-apocalyptic planet that has been torn and shaped by war, corruption and malevolence. Within this ravished world, a single man comes to terms with his surroundings, experiencing new emotions over the course of the album. With each passing song on this 14-track album comes a new message, delivered metaphorically through the struggles of this surviving man.

“There are a number of themes within this album that are very powerful and I’ve put them together in this story about what the world would be like if everything simply went awry,” said John Crispino, Composer and Lead Musician of Seconds Before Landing. “I believe that the science fiction aspect, along with the stellar musical style that we’ve put together, really sets a tone and a feel for what people will get out of this album.”

Along with Crispino, The Great Deception features a wide cast of musical and vocal talents, who lend their sounds to the album in unique ways. Among the guest musicians are Trey Gunn, Warr Guitarist for the progressive rock band King Crimson and Tim Bogert, former Bassist for notable 1960’s and 70’s rock groups Vanilla Fudge, Cactus, and Beck, Bogert & Appice. Together with Crispino, these world-class musicians have crafted an ambient sound that lends itself to the identity of Seconds Before Landing.

Seconds Before Landing is a project by Crispino and showcases his entirely original work. The group’s first album, The Great Deception, was mastered by two-time Grammy Nominee Andy Jackson, engineer of legendary group Pink Floyd.

“I had the opportunity to work with some musical legends, as well as a number of rising talents during the production of this album,” said Crispino. “I’m proud of what we’ve all accomplished. This album is the culmination of hard work and I’m proud to finally call it completed.”

The Great Deception
Over the years we’ve seen rock, pop, and even hard rock slowly erode into over-commercialized, corporate puppet shows providing music that is extremely sing songy, predictable, popish and highly corporate. I hereby call this new breed of music “Poser Rock” and I want to personally thank all the corporate giants for successfully transforming “Sex Drugs & Rock n’ Roll” into “Yoga, Vitamins and Nikelback” Of course millions of musical lemmings don’t know the difference and trust me when I say not everyone is entertained. Talking to many music fans out there the response is overwhelming. Give me something new, something fresh, something real.

So across my desk slides the new self-titled 14 song CD from Singer/Songwriter John Crispino band “Seconds Before Landing” which was released in 2013. During my initial research of this artist I thought this write up in their bio summed it up best: Seconds Before Landing”, the ambient rock collective, formed by musician and composer John Crispino, has released its first full length album. The 14 track concept album, entitled “The Great Deception” features original music from Crispino, with a number of guest talents, from notable musical followings. “King Crimsons” Trey Gunn appears and plays Warr Guitar on several tracks. Also appearing is legendary bassist, Tim Bogert, from Beck Bogert & Appice, Cactus, and Vanilla Fudge. What I heard put a smile on my face. It’s definitely a Progressive Rock record that delivers solid songwriting with a nice Guitar-driven Ambient Rock feel. Seconds Before Landing reminded me of a modern day Genesis, Police, and even Yes on steroids. But you will also hear a side of Alternative Rock, and even Hard Rock in there as well like from Type O Negative and even Tool. If you like the above bands you should definitely check out this CD immediately.

My favorite track is probably “Down on Me”

This latest CD by “Seconds Before Landing” is invigorating to all the senses. Invigorating in the sense that it will lift your spirits, and give you a sense of hope that real rock n’ roll is not officially dead yet. This CD is a solid release with many solid grooves with a smooth ambient hard rock tandem and is entertaining as hell. At the end of the day it’s a CD that gives us a fresh glimpse at an amazing collaboration of sorts that’s been beneath our radar up until now. It also takes us back a few years – before everything started sounding like – well like NIKELBACK.

Learn from the masters
The old adage, "Copy the masters, then create your own," applies here. John and band have shown their roots without clipping from them. Everything is here from Crimson to It's A Beautiful Day, but outstandingly original; not an easy feat, yet one "Seconds" has accomplished beautifully.

Review: I always listen to the opening track extremely carefully. It’s the opening track the band or artists has selected to hit your ears first and foremost. The opening track “What Could it Be” sets the stage rather well for this CD. It was a great intro piece that stuck in my head and had me eager for what was ahead. All in all the whole CD is brilliantly delivered with a powerful Alternative Rock, keyboard/guitar textures with songs that at times can bite you and hit you hard with serious melodic staying power. Music will remind you of Anglagard, Caravan, Peter Hammill, Steven Wilson and yes even Pink Floyd. To be honest I can’t say enough about Crispino ans this bands overall signature sound. Seconds Before Landing present a fresh new voice in modern rock and present a strong message that’s aggressive, upbeat and highly melodic. Their latest CD manages to capture lighting in a bottle and is very loud, wise and at times even in your face sound. Each piece is real, not so overly- corporate sounding and very defiant in nature. Seconds Before Landing possess a clean-tight sound that favors the late 90’s Alternative Rock movement but with a modern new rock feel. They will also remind me of a variety of bands from the 80’s in the hey day of the Hard Prog. Rock movement. They have a new sound but the spirit remains the same. I’ve never heard a new band sound so melodic and fresh. In other words Rock n’ Roll and Punk needs more bands like Seconds Before Landing ASAP!

Favorite Track: Instructions, Solitary Man, Down on Me Elmendorf

Criticism: None

This latest effort is one release that certainly doesn’t disappoint. This is one musical unit that brings to the table effective songwriting via a highly diversified musical delivery and musicianship that will make you dizzy. This meshed with a one in a million Prog-Rock sound and well-rounded songwriting make for an effective combination. Seconds Before Landing even touch on Hard Alt-Rock with hints of Jam Band, and Ambient-Theatrical Rock. All songs are wonderfully simple but masterful in their overall arrangements. Music reminded me of a cross between Chevelle, 10 Years, Evans Blue and even elements of Dream Theatre. This CD though a bit winded with much in the way of overly-sonic musical meandering it’s still quite entertaining and almost fascinating overall with an amazing vocal front and production expertise of Crispino. If he just so happened to write all these songs well he could be bigger than any of us realize at the moment. All songs are amazing via well-crafted pieces and top flight musicianship. There are some incredible moments on this CD. Many songs simply personify the human experience which gives Seconds Before Landing an amazing feel in its attempt to connect with a fanbase locally or abroad. Favorite Track: Right Before Your Eyes
Bottom Line: At least for me Seconds Before Landing affirmed my faith in music again. John Crispino and company area unique, hardworking group of artists that knows their way around a studio, and know how to write you a compelling piece of music. At the end of the day The Great Deception is one hell of a wild ride and delivers an action packed 45+ minute catalog of musical exuberance. It also covers all the bases delivering music that covers all the bases: Alternative Rock, Hard Rock, Ambient Rock.
