holed up

by Setting Sun

Dark. Personal. Quietly emphatic, biting and shrewd. Warm, with a novel sound that manages to be tuneful and melodic backed by lovely ethereal (and sometimes experimental) instrumentation; cello, guitar, bass, keys, drums.

Album Notes
"These tunes have more hooks than a tackle box." - Daily Freeman

"Pop with its edgily tense cortege of suspense straining strings." - Losing Today

"There's a little Bowie in there, and some Elliott Smith, but who cares about comparisons? Setting Sun writes and plays great songs." - New Times

"The writing would have made it stand out either way." - Pittsburgh Post-Gazzette

"It kind of made me feel like I was 15 again and listening to a new Sub Pop band." - Impact Press

"Spacey, thoughtful, and -- dare I say it -- pretty." -Space City Rock

"Setting Sun is good, and good for you." - News Observer (NC)

"Levitt wails with toned-down tinges of Kurt Cobain's emptiness and Elliot Smith's pain." - West Coast Performer

"It's urgent in a kind of methodical and knowing way." -Tasty Fanzine (UK)

"An intimate lyrical style but expansive music, embracing driving beats, soothing instrumental interludes and aggressive rhythms." - Eugene Weekly

"Like a never-ending treasure hunt. Each song evolves to some completely different end without losing its original idea." - Boise Weekly

"With his voice a biting whisper and guitar work that's quietly emphatic and shrewd as it picks its way around the fretboard, Setting Sun's Gary Levitt has more than a little Elliott Smith in him. We're talking old Elliott Smith here, i.e., the sad, intimate and cloudy days of Roman Candle." - Willamette Weekly (Portland)

"Maybe he’s just an independent thinker who’s onto something." - Las Cruces Pulse

I bought this from Itunes. Different than Math and Magic. Both have great songs, but very different production. Reminds me of Roman Candle by Elliott Smith

Brilliant arrangements and haunting pop hooks....
This vocal style is so intimate and emotive, makes me feel I'm right there in the bedroom with this hot sensitive indie-rock guy. Plus, his lovely melodies sit upon lo-fi experimental pop-candy, making this record one of my favorite new flavors. It's dinner and desert in one disc, mmmm stisfying.

Lots of great songs!
There's a lot of great songs on this one. It's great to see the progression of this band. Children of the Wild is my favorite. This one is my second.

creative, compelling and a great listen
I love this cd! I've played it for a few of my friends and they all dig it too. it's got a good vibe. Go Setting Sun!

This is a very special album
This is a keeper and is going to be in my collection for a long time.
This is a very special album.

Hip and Dark Floorboard Rock
Sounds very basement recording style, but in a way that maks you feel like watching your best friends play and sing a song that makes you get goosebumps.
