Album Notes
Shadow Farm is a Leesburg, VA based trio composed of Kathy McMenamin, Matt McGarraghy, and Kevin Hassett. All of the band’s material is captured during free improvisational performances. Sargasso Sea was recorded during the month of January 2009 at Vinegar Hill Studios. Kevin, a bass player, is also responsible for recording these performances. Kathy plays the synthesizer, trying to work in a way to showcase each of the voices of the instrument that are used. Matt, a guitarist, poet, and digital artist, joined the project to fill out the trio.

Some of the driving forces behind the band are the moments of inspiration that the members have cultivated over years of improvisation and electronic experimentation, as well as our deep personal connections to the natural world. We have tried to capture this to share the wonder and joy we feel for these things.

Sargasso Sea took on a life of its own during its creation. Initially recorded as a way to hear what we were doing as a new band while improvising, we started to hear the siren call of the ocean in the music that appeared and the album’s theme was made clear to us. Like those sailors who found themselves adrift in the Sargasso Sea, we felt in solidarity with them as we played, awaiting the muse to fill our sails with inspiration and bring us to the next musical theme where all was in harmony once again, our ship gliding along in the sound of the waves and wind.

Please buy this album so that we can get fish food and feed our goldfish in the fishbowl we call the Sargasso Sea!
