Shama is a singer and songwriter who accompanies herself on a variety of instruments. Her voice carries a sacred, healing vibration, which in one moment can be animated and energizing and in the next deeply serene and contemplative.
Shama's music reflects the varied spiritual practices she has studied and embraced. She views all these teachings and practices as different facets of the diamond mind. Through any one of them, we can see that all differences are illusion, and that in truth, all is one. Sound is a path which can guide us there. This album includes chants in Hawaiian as well as the Gayatri Mantra which open the heart and chakras to create a deep sense of peace.
Her musical style is eclectic and World Beat. It has been formed by her experiences with African and Afro-cuban drumming and Brazilian percussion, training in Hindustani Raga singing, Sanskrit chanting, and singing in a variety of choral and improvisational groups. However, the most important influence is the inspiration that flows when the heart opens to the messages of spirit.
Since 2009, Shama has led Ho'oponopono workshops with Liliana Penaherrera. Ho'oponopono is a powerful Hawaiian forgiveness practice, which Dr. Hew Len brought to the attention of the world when he used Ho'oponopono to heal psychiatric patients in Hawaii. In their workshops, Shama and Liliana explain the Ho'oponopono process and provide music to facilitate this beautiful practice. Her website includes an article with her ideas about Ho'oponopono.
