ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
"... a new twist on the raucous, slippery, foot-happy jazz you'd expect to hear at the legendary Cotton Club ... hard to resist " -- The Oregonian

Hey, I got your CD yesterday, listened to it twice in a row. It rocks! The sound is killer, the players are great, and the production rules. Nice package! I was kind of expecting something more straight forward but you guys definitely have made a delicious stew of many styles. While it may be easy for someone to put into a specific catagory (which is a good thing), the project is way more psychedelic, crossing influences and time. Alot of this has to do with the production, oh yeah, and the Hendrix guitar leads. My favorite song thus far is Serenade to a Savage. I also like the freshness and originality in the arrangements, lots of suprises. Hurray!
- Wiley Woods, Stiff Dead Cat

"Sound Advice: Don't let anyone pull the Woolies over your eyes. Get in early on Portland's next hot band... Hot jazz, baby."
-Jonathan Nicholas, The Oregonian

"This Union of Portland journeymen ain't your average attempt to hop on the swing cart. Mixing and matching from the disparate closets of pop, blues and jazz... new take on le jazz hot. With choices ranging from W.C. Handy to Raymond Scott, this is dyed-in-the-wool eclecticism."
-Bill Smith, Willamette Week

"the coolest band I've ever seen!"
-Marv Ross, Ross Productions, Cycle Oregon, Trail Band

"fantasic... amazing... rock solid... sizzling... [Mel Kubik] has a delicious refined sound... delightful talent... Wow! what a voice."

Update of classic style. For instance, two thirds of the way through the Toodle-oo you notice what sound like electric guitars sneaking in. And it works!

Shanghai Woolies are a fun mix of talented musicians and comic relief.
Shanghai Woolies are a fun mix of early sound recording styles and comic relief. Talented musicians, all.

Great disc, great group, see them live! Wild mixture of olds sounds and new sensibilities...not a retro trip, just wonderful music.

i wasn't sure what to expect, but, what can i say. the cd was great. you could almost picture the smoke filled club, the people laughing & listening.

Cool Wool!
Came across the Woolies on the Pink Martini site & went to their MySpace page for a listen, &.....

BOOYAH!!

From the opening understated hum of the guitar to the kick-in of the brass in the first minute of East Saint Louis Toodle-oo, I was hooked. There's a great mix-up of virtuoso instrumentals & smoky-vocalled torch-songs & bluesers. It's like taking a step back to a club with Satchmo, Whitehead or Goodman on the stage & being joined by Billie Holliday on the mic, & a modern mixing desk hidden up the back of the room. What a bargain, what a sound. It's not been off the stereo all week. Cheers Woolies.

LOVE the trumpet!!!
I tried this CD on a whim, simply because I love Gavin Bondy's (sp?) trumpet playing with the group, Pink Martini. Now I have a NEW favorite group! The vocals sound really fresh (anyone else tired of the Britney and Jessica voice?) and are spot on pitch - a nice change. I recommend this to anyone looking to start or even fill out a well-rounded cd collection.

most refreshing sound in a very long time.
A friend from Portland sent me your CD for Christmas and I have played it twenty times since. Musicians are talented and very creative. When are you coming to Fargo, N. Dakota??? Please hurry.

Most excellent! A must for any Pink Martini fan, a different twist but the same trumpeter and they share an inovative update-retro approach.
